Building Long-Term Opportunities for Montana Farm Families
“International trade remains a critical component of Montana agriculture’s success, and missions like this allow producers to build relationships that can translate into long-term opportunities for our farm and ranch families,” Justin Miller said following a recent state-led trade delegation.
Miller, representing the Montana Farm Bureau, joined state leaders, agricultural stakeholders, and business representatives from October 5 to 9, 2026, on Governor Greg Gianforte’s trade mission to India and Sri Lanka. The initiative marked Montana’s first governor-led trade mission to India. It brought together delegates from agriculture, higher education, manufacturing, critical minerals, bioscience, and emerging technology sectors.
Targeting the World’s Largest Consumer of Pulse Crops
India stands as the world’s largest consumer and importer of pulse crops. This establishes a vital market for Montana-grown lentils, chickpeas, and peas. Montana leads the nation in pulse crop production. This positions the state to supply growing food demand abroad while generating economic returns for domestic producers.
Delegation Meets Officials to Increase Agricultural Market Access
Throughout the mission, delegation members met with government officials, trade representatives, agricultural partners, educational institutions, and business leaders. Discussions centered on increasing market access, reinforcing international partnerships, and emphasizing the reliability of Montana agricultural products.

Forging Global Trust Through High-Quality Exports
“Trade is not simply about exports; it’s about relationships,” Miller said. “Montana farmers and ranchers produce some of the highest-quality food and agricultural products in the world. Building trust with customers overseas helps ensure those products and hard work continue to reach consumers who value reliability and quality.”
Expanding Beyond Agriculture into Technology and Research
Beyond agriculture, the delegation promoted the state’s research capabilities, educational partnerships, and innovative industries, while exploring alternative supply chains for the tech sector. Governor Gianforte noted that the trip aimed to showcase Montana as a premier place for doing business.
Miller expressed appreciation for the governor’s leadership in championing the state’s producers on an international stage, stating that the initiative ensures Montana agriculture has a seat at the table.
