Response and Community Grief in Caribou County

Emergency medical services, sheriff’s deputies, and troopers with the Idaho State Police rushed to the scene south of Grace. Crews transported Corta by ambulance to Caribou Medical Center in Soda Springs. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Caribou County Coroner Casey Batterton identified the young man and shared a personal message with the community on social media. Batterton wrote that Corta’s absence is already being felt across local homes and hearts.

“In a town like ours, a loss like this is never just one family’s loss. It belongs to all of us,” Batterton wrote. “Many of you knew them. Many of you are hurting too. It’s okay to grieve. It’s okay to not be okay.”

The Sheriff’s Office issued a statement calling the sudden loss of someone so young a devastating blow that weighs heavily on the entire community.
