Massive Blaze Strikes South Suburban Blue Island Building
A massive fire erupted at a building in south suburban Blue Island on Saturday, sending heavy flames and smoke pouring from the structure. The fire broke out before 5 p.m., drawing multiple fire departments and filling nearby sidewalks with onlookers and trick-or-treaters as the emergency unfolded.
The brick building at the corner of Western Avenue and Union Street housed several businesses, including a pet groomer, a music school, and a locksmith, with four apartments located on the upper level, according to local reports. Video captured at the scene and posted on the Citizen app and through ABC7 drone footage showed thick smoke and intense flames erupting from the second floor.
Police Order Building Evacuations as Heavy Smoke Spreads
As the firefight intensified, local police ordered crowds back from the sidewalks while nearby buildings were evacuated due to the heavy smoke. “I guess the smoke is, like, coming up into [our] apartment, so our landlord and the fire department said we have to evacuate to this place,” neighbor Daysha Robinson-Boyd told reporters at the scene.
Witnesses described the rapid spread of the blaze. “All of a sudden, you just seen the fire and you just seen a whoosh, and [then] big flames just start shooting out of the top,” neighbor Sidney Brown recalled. Much of the structure is now destroyed, leaving residents facing immediate displacement.
Neighbor Catrina Robinson noted that friends of hers lived in the apartments above the businesses. While they were not inside at the time, their dog remained trapped in a cage. “By the time the fire department came, that’s when it got really bad, and they couldn’t get to the dog,” Robinson said. “They lost, they lost everything. They have to start all over again.”

Fire Departments Battle Blaze with No Injuries Reported
Blue Island’s city administrator stated around 6 p.m. that the Blue Island Fire Department was actively working with neighboring agencies to extinguish the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities had been reported as of Saturday evening.
While the exact number of displaced residents remains unconfirmed and the precise origin of the fire is still unclear, local officials confirmed that the American Red Cross is working to secure temporary housing for those affected.
