The Met Gala Pivots to Everyday Materials After Galliano Controversy
When the original plans for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s spring 2027 exhibition fell apart, head curator Andrew Bolton admitted he was facing a blank slate. I had no Plan B, to be honest,
Bolton said, noting that there was not another fully researched exhibition waiting in the wings once the museum parted ways with John Galliano.
That scramble ended on November 5, when Vogue and the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute officially announced a complete change in direction. Instead of honoring Galliano, the upcoming spring 2027 exhibition will celebrate ordinary garments and commonplace materials. Titled “extraORDINARY: Fashion and the Poetics of the Everyday,” the new showcase focuses on items like jeans, puffer jackets, T-shirts, raincoats, and sweatshirts, alongside disposable substances such as paper, aluminum, and plastic.
Replacing a Canceled Retrospective
The pivot comes just months after the museum scuttled its planned Galliano retrospective. That initial idea, announced with fanfare in late July, drew swift and intense backlash from donors, city officials, and the Jewish community. Critics pointed to the designer’s past antisemitic and racist statements, which led to his firing from Christian Dior in 2011 and a subsequent conviction in a French court.
One of the most vocal opponents was New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the daughter of a Holocaust survivor, who met repeatedly with museum leadership to voice her opposition. The planned 2027 gala was scheduled to fall directly on Holocaust Remembrance Day. In August, Menin called the cancellation the correct decision, emphasizing that the pain the exhibit caused was simply unacceptable.
Following the outcry, Galliano and the museum agreed to cancel the retrospective. In a statement released at the time, Galliano addressed the fallout directly. I remain fully accountable for the pain caused by my words in the past, particularly the hurt I caused to the Jewish and Asian communities, and I remain deeply sorry for it,
he said.

Vogue’s global editorial director Anna Wintour, who oversees the gala and previously supported the Galliano retrospective, defended the cancellation in August as a courageous step. With the controversy behind them, museum organizers turned their attention to Bolton’s alternative concept.
Designers Elevate Familiar Garments to Runway Creations
The exhibition is being curated by Bolton alongside Stephanie Kramer and Emily Mushaben. The show aims to explore how designers take these familiar archetypal garments and elevate them to runway-worthy creations, while also transforming humble or disposable materials into wearable art. Bolton told interviewers that finding an exhibition with contemporary resonance was crucial, rather than simply putting together an easier masterwork show.

Looking Ahead to the May 3 Gala
The spring exhibition will open to the public on May 9, 2027, running through January 9, 2028. As tradition dictates, it will be launched by the Met Gala on the first Monday in May—set for May 3, 2027. The annual fundraising event serves as the primary financial engine for the Costume Institute.
While the museum has established its new thematic direction, many details for the night remain unannounced. The Met Gala’s official dress code, along with the newest slate of celebrity hosts, will be revealed at a later date, leaving designers, celebrities, and fashion enthusiasts to wonder how the concept of everyday denim, paper, and plastic will be interpreted on the red carpet.
