Defense and Ground Control Lift Missouri State Past Sam Houston
Missouri State locked down Sam Houston in the second half of Tuesday night’s matchup, turning a narrow halftime lead into a 24-3 Conference USA victory in Springfield. The Bears leaned on a stifling defense that surrendered just 26 rushing yards on 25 carries, marking the fewest ground yards allowed by the program since a 2022 outing against Western Illinois, according to missouristatebears.com reporting.
That defensive clampdown completely altered the rhythm of the game after intermission. While Sam Houston kept things close early, the Bearkats found themselves utterly erased from the running game as the night wore on. It was only the fourth time over the last three decades that Missouri State held an opponent to 26 rushing yards or fewer, setting up a methodical pull-away performance by the home team.
Belin and Robinson Lead Efficient Bears Offense
Bears quarterback Henry Belin IV orchestrated the offense with sharp precision, completing 12 of 18 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, Connor Lair carried 19 times for 75 yards and a score, notching his third consecutive game with at least 65 rushing yards.
Jmariyae Robinson proved to be Belin’s favorite target on the night, hauling in 7 receptions for a game-high 102 yards and a touchdown. That performance made Robinson the first opposing pass-catcher to eclipse the century mark against Sam Houston this season. It also brought him within 100 yards of Missouri State’s career receiving yardage record, a mark currently held by assistant coach Jermaine Saffold at 2,221 yards. Robinson additionally extended his school-record streak to 42 consecutive games with a reception.
Isaiah Myers chipped in with 3 catches for 77 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown strike from Belin in the opening half that helped stake the Bears to a 10-3 lead at the break. Sam Houston’s lone score came via a 33-yard field goal by Sam Carpenter in the final minute of the first quarter.
Fourth Quarter Touchdowns Seal Victory for Missouri State
Ramone Green Jr. did the heavy lifting on the 80-yard march, carrying six times to set up a crucial fourth-and-two at the Sam Houston 37-yard line. Head coach Casey Woods’ squad elected to go for it, and Belin connected with Robinson for a 37-yard touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter, stretching the margin to 17-3.
Sam Houston muffed a punt at its own 17-yard line, and Martavis Blackmon recovered it for the Bears at the 18. Four straight carries by Lair finished off the short field, sealing the 24-3 scoreline with 3:44 remaining.
The Missouri State defensive front overwhelmed the Bearkats all evening, racking up a season-high 5.0 sacks, 8.0 tackles for loss, and 9 pass breakups. Jared Lloyd led the charge with 7 stops, 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack, and a pair of pass breakups. With starting quarterback Landyn Locke sidelined, Sam Houston turned to junior DJ Bailey, who finished 20-of-35 for 258 yards distributing to nine different receivers.
Looking Ahead to the Road Trip
The win moves Missouri State to 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Conference USA play, while evening their home record at 3-1.
