Gleyber Torres Enters MLB Free Agency After One Season in Detroit
Gleyber Torres is officially back on the open market. MLB.com wrote (on October 29): “2B Gleyber Torres elected free agency.” He will be available to sign with any team in the MLB.
The move comes on the heels of a single season in the Motor City. Torres originally joined the Detroit Tigers ahead of the 2025 campaign, agreeing to a one-year, $15 million contract that ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported on December 27, 2024. That deal followed a great ALCS after a bit of down year on the power side for the Yankees. He’ll start at 2b for Detroit. The Tigers are managed by A.J. Hinch.
During the 2026 season, Torres appeared in 96 games for Detroit, batting .260 with 93 hits, eight home runs, 38 RBIs, and 57 runs. The Detroit Tigers had a very talented roster at the start of the 2026 season. That said, they made trades (and dealt with injuries). The team finished the 2026 season as the fourth-place team in the American League Central with a 76-86 record, missing the 2026 MLB playoffs. The franchise last reached the World Series during the 2012 season when Justin Verlander was in his first stint with the franchise.

Evaluating the Market for a Proven Infield Veteran
At 29 years old, Torres presents an intriguing free agent to hit the market. His resume includes the first seven years of his career spent playing for the New York Yankees, where he made the All-Star Game in each of his first two seasons at the MLB level and helped the Yankees reach the World Series during his final year with the franchise (2024).
With free agency officially underway, the second baseman enters a new phase of his career.
