Slabs of cedar, pine, poplar, oak, and ash are moving from Montgomery County’s parklands to local workshops this November. Montgomery Parks announced that its annual Urban Wood Sale will take place on Saturday, November 14, at the Green Farm Facility in Gaithersburg, offering the public a chance to purchase lumber salvaged from trees managed within the county’s 37,000 acres of parkland.
The Green Farm Facility Sale Details
The sale runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., or while supplies last, at 8301 Turkey Thicket Drive. Because the event operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance sales allowed, the department is encouraging woodworkers, artists, and DIY enthusiasts to arrive early. Payments must be made by credit card only.
The inventory includes a variety of wood species in multiple states of preparation. Shoppers can choose from boards that have been kiln-dried, air-dried, or planed. Prices for these materials are set between $5 and $400, depending on the size of the board and the species of the wood.
Funding the Urban Wood Waste Recycling Program
Proceeds from the sale are directed toward the Montgomery Parks Urban Wood Waste Recycling Program and the Green Waste Recycling Program. These programs are designed to divert organic material from landfills, converting what would otherwise be considered waste into mulch, compost, woodchips, and milled lumber for future park projects.
Montgomery Parks, a division of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), manages 417 parks. The commission has been involved in the stewardship of public lands since 1927. By integrating timber salvage into their management model, the department aims to promote environmental stewardship while providing community access to high-quality materials.
