Union Issues Classroom Guidance on Middle East Conflict
The Massachusetts Teachers Association has published a curated collection of curricula and resources intended to assist union members in addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict within their classrooms, according to massteacher.org.
A Response to Regional Devastation
The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas, marked by the loss of civilian lives and widespread destruction in Gaza, has resonated deeply within the union, according to leadership. These events reach directly into American homes, impacting members, students, and their families. The union maintains that educators hold a responsibility to teach world events while fostering critical thinking about media sources and preserving safe school environments. Union leaders emphasized that these are emotional and personal issues for members and their communities, requiring educators to be equipped with knowledge, skills, and support to facilitate dialogue.
Task Force Development
To support this goal, a task force established by the MTA Board of Directors in March 2025 revised a dedicated web page of instructional materials. This group conducted its work throughout late 2025 and 2026, aiming to provide pathways for educators to facilitate respectful dialogue on sensitive social issues. The union noted that the site may be revised periodically in response to shifting developments and technical changes, as external websites housing these materials often update their content.

Addressing Social Impacts
The organization clarified that these materials are specifically focused on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict rather than serving as a broader set of resources regarding the Middle East or general biases against specific groups.
Officials Curate Partial List from Existing Sources
The collected materials reflect diverse positions to aid members’ learning pedagogy, though officials stress the list is partial and non-exhaustive. The MTA does not endorse the specific messages found in the individual resources. These selections were drawn largely from existing school district materials, educational programs, and mainstream media. Some items regarding Israel’s broader military and political engagements are included due to their potential relevance to the core conflict.
MTA leaders and staff continue to assess submissions as part of an ongoing review process, with the authority to add or delete material as situations develop. Members may submit additional items for consideration via pedagogical resources email channels.
Union Organizes Materials into Digital Library Categories
The union has organized these materials into categories to assist educators. The digital library provides users with the ability to find specific resources by audience type or by the nature of the materials themselves.
