NAS Oceana Upgrades Fitness Center to Improve Sailor Quality of Life

Naval Air Station Oceana is currently executing a comprehensive overhaul of its base fitness center, a project designed to modernize facilities for the nearly 1,000 service members who utilize the gym on an average day. This renovation, which began with replacing the building's original flooring, is part of an effort to improve the quality of life for sailors stationed in Virginia Beach.

New Gym Flooring Protects Equipment and Facility Longevity

The decision to replace the gym’s flooring is rooted in both immediate utility and long-term asset management. According to base officials, the original surface had reached a point where an upgrade was necessary to protect the facility’s high-end exercise equipment from premature wear and tear. By installing more durable flooring, the installation aims to elongate the functional life of the building itself.

The facility remains a 24/7 operation despite the ongoing construction, catering to a consistent flow of personnel. Lisa Sibelius, the Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) operations manager, emphasized that these renovations are a core component of the base’s quality of life program. The goal is to ensure that the environment reflects the professional standards of the Navy while providing a functional space for physical readiness.

Expanding Recreation Beyond the Gym Walls

While the physical fitness center is the current focal point, the MWR team at Oceana is viewing the project through a wider lens of mental well-being and community engagement. The strategy is designed to create an interconnected recreation hub that encourages junior sailors to spend time outside of the barracks.

A notable addition to this effort is the construction of a new media and press box area. This space features a large-scale television setup, specifically equipped with an NFL package to allow sailors a communal space to watch games on Sundays. This initiative is part of a larger suite of recreational offerings at the base, which already includes a 36-hole golf course and a system for renting camping equipment.

“It instills a sense of pride in the people who work here, and then it also instills a sense of pride in the sailors that work here as well,” said Lisa Sibelius, MWR operations manager. “Knowing that what we’re doing on a daily basis gives back to the Navy community and families.”

The Stakes for Junior Personnel

The emphasis on “home away from home” amenities is a deliberate move to address the unique pressures faced by junior service members.
