Nick Saban named LSU his dark-horse pick for the national title during Saturday morning’s broadcast of ESPN’s College GameDay, highlighting the squad’s impressive point differentials and defensive prowess just a week before the No. 15 Tigers host his former team, No. 10 Alabama.

The Numbers Behind the Sleeper Pick

The seven-time national champion and former Alabama head coach backed his national championship dark horse prediction using pure statistics from the Tigers’ first eight games. LSU currently scores more than 40 points per contest while allowing only 16, having outscored opponents 321 to 128 through a 6-2 start in Lane Kiffin’s first season in Baton Rouge.

Every single one of LSU’s six victories has come by a margin of 21 points or more. The resume features a 51-10 dismantling of Clemson in the season opener, a 35-6 rout of Texas A&M, a 31-0 shutout against Mississippi State, and a recent 38-17 victory over Auburn.

In the win against Auburn, quarterback Sam Leavitt delivered a career-best performance by completing 32 of 45 pass attempts for 387 yards and three touchdowns. Beyond the raw numbers, the Tigers have strung together long, methodical drives that consistently protect and empower a defense currently leading the Southeastern Conference in both total offense and total defense.

The Turnover Dilemma in Baton Rouge

Despite the glowing assessment, Saban warned that one major flaw could derail the title run. Leavitt, an Arizona State transfer running Kiffin’s offense, struggled heavily with ball security early in the year.

The quarterback threw eight interceptions across LSU’s first six games. That included a three-interception outing in a 45-14 win over Louisiana Tech, making Leavitt the only quarterback in the Football Bowl Subdivision to record a turnover in every single one of his team’s opening six contests.

Security has tightened significantly since the Kentucky game, however. Leavitt has avoided throwing an interception during that span, while LSU has outscored opponents 69-17 cleanly without a turnover. Kiffin used the recent bye week to emphasize turnover margins, as LSU’s overall margin remains negative. That weakness stands in sharp contrast to Alabama, which leads the SEC with 12 interceptions and has forced at least one turnover in every game this season.

A High-Stakes Showdown in Tiger Stadium

Alabama arrives in Baton Rouge holding a 6-2 overall record and a 4-2 mark in conference play following consecutive losses to Georgia and Tennessee, though the Crimson Tide rebounded with a 31-20 victory over Texas A&M. Acknowledging the upcoming challenge, Kiffin remarked that the visiting squad remains loaded.

The fixture carries immense weight beyond conference standings. Alabama has claimed victory in the past three meetings, with LSU’s last triumph coming via a 32-31 overtime decision in 2022. Saturday's clash marks the final annual meeting between the two schools, the first in over 60 years. Due to the updated nine-game SEC scheduling structure, the traditional annual matchup between the two programs will be omitted next season.
