Less than twenty-four hours after a sobering four-point loss on the island of Oahu, the Lubbock Christian University basketball team turned frustration into a dominant offensive performance. The Lady Chaps dismantled Western Colorado 80-49 on Saturday afternoon at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Center, shooting a blistering 58.6% from the field to secure their largest margin of victory immediately following a defeat in more than seven years.
The bounce-back performance leveled LCU’s early-season record at 1-1 during the Hoops in Hawaii Tip-Off Classic. It erased the bitter taste of Friday’s 58-54 setback against Winona State, rewriting a script that had left the roster searching for interior rhythm just one day prior.
A Sizzling Third-Quarter Surge Breaks It Open
The afternoon began with competitive friction, but LCU seized control for the final thirty-six minutes of regulation. Holding a manageable 39-25 advantage at halftime, the Lady Chaps engineered a decisive third-quarter surge that put the contest out of reach permanently. LCU outscored the Mountaineers 24-10 in that frame alone, connecting on an astonishing 11-of-15 field goal attempts—good for 73.3% accuracy from the floor.
That efficiency stood in stark contrast to Western Colorado’s offensive drought. The Mountaineers managed just two made field goals on twelve tries during the third quarter, crumbling against an aggressive LCU defense that forced 19 total turnovers over the course of the afternoon. By the time Ally Ihler sank a late three-pointer with seven seconds remaining in the third, the lead had ballooned to 63-35.
Sophomore Standouts Fuel the Attack
Sophomores Mattie Dollar and Meg Meekins spearheaded the offensive onslaught, combining for 37 points. Dollar mirrored her career-high performance from Friday by netting another 20 points, shooting a precise 9-of-11 from the field while adding five assists and three steals. Her plus-26 rating anchored a starting lineup that refused to let up.
Meekins, the reigning Lone Star Conference Freshman of the Year, rebounded from a quiet two-point outing against Winona State by erupting for 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Ally Ihler chipped in a career-high 10 points off the bench, marking her first collegiate performance in double figures. In total, ten different Lady Chaps found the scoring column, while thirteen players saw the floor.
| Player | Points | Field Goals | 3-Pointers | Plus/Minus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mattie Dollar | 20 | 9-11 | 2-3 | +26 |
| Meg Meekins | 17 | 8-11 | N/A | +20 |
| Ally Ihler | 10 | 4-6 | 1-2 | N/A |
The inside game provided the fundamental shift from Friday’s opener. After managing a meager 14 points in the paint against Winona State, LCU dominated the interior against Western Colorado with a 52-22 advantage in paint scoring. Defensively, the Lady Chaps held their opponents to 34.8% shooting overall.
Looking Ahead to the Home Opener
The victory improves LCU to 9-4 all-time in D2CCA-sanctioned tip-off events and moves their historical record in Hawaii to 5-1. It also extends their unbeaten streak against Western Colorado to 4-0.
The two programs will not have to wait long for a rematch. Western Colorado is scheduled to visit Lubbock for the Lady Chaps’ home opener Nov. 9.
