A long-standing Halloween tradition in Bloomfield, New Jersey, has become a flashpoint for local tension, as a homeowner faces a series of anonymous complaints and acts of vandalism while hosting an elaborate seasonal attraction. For more than 20 years, James Joanow has transformed his property with a massive display that draws thousands of visitors during the two weeks preceding Halloween, but the popularity of the site has brought him into conflict with neighbors.
Backlash Follows Popular Halloween Display
Created by Joanow with the assistance of friends and volunteers, the display stretches from the side yard to the back of the property. The site features various themed sets and animated attractions, including what Joanow refers to as the catacombs.
Kids go crazy when they come here because they see things you don’t see at most decoration sites,
Joanow said. The planning process for the event begins as early as July, with decoration work continuing until the holiday itself.
Despite the popular Halloween destination, the increased foot traffic and noise have triggered a backlash. Joanow reported that someone targeted his home by placing nails in his driveway, which resulted in a flat tire after his car rolled over them. Furthermore, local police have visited the property to address approximately a dozen anonymous complaints regarding noise and the number of people walking in the area.
Creator Plans to Keep Display Open Through Halloween
Joanow maintains that he is operating within the bounds of local regulations, noting that the display runs strictly between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. But we stayed open till 10 because that’s what ordinance allows us to do,
he stated regarding the police intervention. While he described the responding officers as very respectful,
the pressure from the community has left a mark on the annual tradition.
As the holiday approaches, Joanow plans to keep the display open through Halloween night. Once the event concludes, he intends to begin the immediate removal of the decorations. It all comes down Halloween night after 10 o’clock,
Joanow explained. Usually, we start at 11 o’clock at night at which we take it all down. We stay out till 3 or 4 in the morning.
