Voters began casting ballots on the first day of early voting in New York on Oct. 24, as noted by npr.org.

That rollout brings intense scrutiny to a crucial sliver of the electorate. These are the rare swing voters who bounce from one side to the other. They help determine which candidates ultimately win tight races.

Throughout 2026, NPR has maintained a front-row seat to the internal calculus of these citizens. A special hour-long discussion released by NPR highlights five distinct takeaways from listening to voters who supported Joe Biden in 2020 before swinging to back Trump in 2024.

Inside the Swing Voter Project Focus Groups

These participants have been taking part in the Swing Voter Project.

The initiative hosts monthly online focus groups run by the messaging firm Engagious and the market research recruiting firm Nelson Recruiting. NPR serves as a project partner.

Just ahead of Election Day, the insights gathered from these sessions offer an unfiltered look at shifting voter sentiment. The special broadcast detailing these dynamics is titled “Swing voters and the issues that matter”.

Finally, the focus groups revealed broad, cross-partisan concern regarding the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and the heavy proliferation of data centers.
