PSNI Investigates Alleged Assault Involving Enoch Burke at Armagh Cathedral
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is investigating an alleged assault following an incident outside St Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh. The incident, which took place on Thursday, October 29, involved Enoch Burke and the Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop John McDowell.
A complaint was filed with the police after Mr Burke approached the archbishop following a funeral service. Social media footage of the episode shows Mr Burke remonstrating with Archbishop John McDowell in the cathedral grounds, with the confrontation reportedly continuing to the door of the archbishop’s residence.
Confrontation Follows Cathedral Funeral Service
Archbishop McDowell, aged 70, had gathered at the cathedral alongside family, colleagues, and friends for the funeral service of a late church rector. As the attendees departed, Mr Burke and members of his family approached the clergyman.
Video footage shared by the Burke family shows Mr Burke repeatedly attempting to question the archbishop regarding his silence over Mr Burke’s prolonged imprisonment. In the recording, the 70-year-old archbishop attempts to walk away on multiple occasions while being blocked and having his arms grabbed by Mr Burke.
A spokesperson for the PSNI stated on Friday morning that inquiries are ongoing. “Police are investigating a report of an assault on a member of the clergy at St Patrick’s Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh on Thursday 29th October,” the spokesperson said.
The Roots of the Dispute Over Pronouns and Imprisonment
The confrontation stems from a long-running controversy that began in 2022, when the principal of Wilson’s Hospital School—a Church of Ireland-run secondary school in County Westmeath—requested that staff address a student using a new name and the pronoun “they”. Mr Burke, who served as a history and German teacher at the institution, argued that the directive went against his right to express his religious beliefs.

Following his refusal to comply, Mr Burke was suspended and subsequently dismissed from the school. He was jailed for more than 700 days for breaching court orders not to attend the school. On Thursday, he was banned from going within 100 metres of Wilson’s Hospital School in Co Westmeath.
In a statement regarding the Armagh incident, Mr Burke defended his actions by pointing to the archbishop’s role as patron of Wilson’s Hospital School. “The silence of Archbishop John McDowell, Primate of All-Ireland and Patron of Wilson’s Hospital School, is astounding and no longer acceptable,” Mr Burke stated.

Church of Ireland Responds with Deep Concern
The Church of Ireland issued a statement expressing profound sadness over the choice of venue and manner of the encounter.
“It is a matter of deep concern and sadness that the Burke family considered this was an appropriate occasion to confront the Archbishop in a particularly hostile and aggressive manner,” a Church spokesperson said. “No respect was shown for the occasion or the sanctity of the cathedral grounds.”
The Church also clarified the legal context of Mr Burke’s prior detentions, noting that he had been jailed for contempt of court and not for any religious beliefs that he may hold. Church authorities and witnesses present at the scene are assisting the PSNI with its ongoing investigation, and church officials indicated that no further statements will be released until the police inquiries conclude.
