NYSE Prepares Binary Options Rollout

The New York Stock Exchange is preparing to launch all-or-nothing options contracts that let investors bet on whether specific equities or exchange-traded funds will close above or below a predetermined price, Reuters reported.

Initial Lineup Features 12 Assets

The binary return options contracts are scheduled to begin trading within days. The initial lineup features 12 underlying securities, including Apple, Nvidia, Tesla, and the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, with more assets slated for integration over time.

This rollout arrives as trading volumes in options and event-driven contracts expand rapidly. Exchanges are racing to roll out instruments that offer both retail and institutional market participants tighter risk management tools and sharper ways to express directional views.

“We’ve seen this incredible growth in the US options market over the last several years. When we look inside that volume growth, there’s a lot of interest in newer ways to trade or newer products to trade,” said Kevin Tyrrell, chief product officer at NYSE.

Operational Data Targets Cash Settlement

Unlike standard options tied strictly to share price fluctuations, KPI options target core operational metrics. Investors could trade directly on results such as net sales, earnings per share, cloud-computing revenue, or vehicle production numbers.

These contracts are structured as cash-settled, European-style instruments, meaning they can be exercised solely at expiration. Depending on whether the reported metric hits the contract’s strike level, the payoff is either one dollar or nothing. Competitors are moving into the same territory, as Cboe Global Markets recently secured approval for comparable KPI-based contracts through a partnership with Robinhood.
