Former Boston Celtics star Paul Pierce is in a severe financial crisis, claiming in recent court documents that he is "drowning financially" and "tapped out" while struggling to keep up with monthly expenses and court-ordered support payments, Boston.com reported.
From $200 Million in Career Earnings to Zero Monthly Income
Over a 19-year NBA career that culminated in him winning the 2008 NBA Finals MVP award, Pierce earned nearly $200 million in salary, spending the vast majority of those seasons anchoring the Celtics franchise. Yet, legal documents obtained by the tabloid giant TMZ reveal a starkly different reality for the 49-year-old retired athlete today.
Pierce stated in the filings that his average monthly income has plummeted to zero, a drastic change from an average of $119K per month. He reported earning roughly $23K last month alone from partnership interests in separate business ventures.
Pierce Pays Thousands in Monthly Support and Living Costs
The court filings stem from an ongoing legal battle between Pierce and his ex-girlfriend, Princess Santiago, who share a son born in February 2026. According to the documents cited by TMZ, Pierce currently pays approximately $28,000 per month in child support and another $20,000 in spousal support.
Beyond those obligations, Pierce disclosed that his monthly living expenses total an additional $48,000. That figure covers a wide range of domestic and lifestyle costs:
- Childcare: $8,000
- Dining out: $7,000
- Groceries: $5,000
- Entertainment: $3,500
- Utilities: $3,200
- Clothes: $1,000
- Various other expenses
Against these recurring obligations, Pierce reported holding just $300,000 in the bank and approximately $3 million in property assets. Compounding the legal pressure, People’s Natasha Dye and Danielle Bacher reported that Pierce was ordered to pay $100,000 in attorney’s fees along with an additional $10,000 for a forensic accountant.
Legal counsel for Pierce argued in the documents that these fees “no longer reflect [Pierce’s] actual income,” maintaining that he is “unable to keep up with his obligation to pay his own counsel and forensic accountant, let alone pay additional funds to the other side in attorney’s fees and forensic accounting fees,” as reported by People.
Post-Playing Career Turbulence in Sports Media
Transitioning away from the hardwood has proved difficult for Pierce, particularly after moving into television analysis. He served as an analyst for ESPN from 2017 until 2021, when the network fired him following an incident where he posted live-streaming videos of himself smoking, drinking, and dancing with women on Instagram Live.
Pierce subsequently found work at Fox Sports, appearing as a panelist on the daily sports talk show Speak. However, that platform disappeared last year when Fox Sports canceled several sports programs, with Pierce receiving his final check from the network in August.
