Three I-65 Ramps Reopen in Louisville as Central Corridor Project Progresses
Drivers in downtown Louisville are getting a slight reprieve this week. According to local reporting from WDRB and WAVE, three key Interstate 65 ramps are reopening after months of closures, marking a tangible milestone in the ongoing Interstate 65 Central Corridor project.
Crews finished enough structural work on the new I-65 bridge spanning Hill Street, the CSX railroad, and Burnett Avenue to lift several barricades. By Thursday morning, Oct. 29, 2026, the on-ramp to southbound I-65 from Magnolia, Floyd, and Preston streets welcomed back traffic, alongside the off-ramp from southbound I-65 to Arthur Street at Exit 134, as detailed by I65CentralCorridor.com. Another crucial connector, the on-ramp from Preston Street to northbound I-65, follows suit by 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, 2026.
The reopening schedule sits roughly three weeks ahead of initial projections. Alongside the restored access points, motorists will encounter a shifted traffic pattern returning southbound I-65 travel to its normal lanes after drivers temporarily relied on northbound lanes.

Local Surface Street Closures Force Wide Detours
While highway commuters regain access, the daily routine for nearby residents remains disrupted. John Long lives directly adjacent to the interstate corridor and points out that while highway transit has largely smoothed out once the main lanes reopened, driving local surface streets continues to demand extra miles.
The biggest pain is a lot of these surface streets that are closed to do the work, so that’s having to find a different route to really go anywhere, even the grocery, so that’s kind of a pain.
Long noted that the localized closures forced him to take wide detours just to run routine errands. At the same time, he acknowledged the silver lining of reduced traffic noise during the height of construction.
“I honestly wouldn’t be disappointed if they just kept that ramp closed forever, because it’s just too many on-ramps as it is on 65 South,” Long remarked, though he admitted the relief of avoiding downtown detours outweighs the friction.
The work zone is far from clear. Transportation officials caution that drivers must still anticipate lingering restrictions across the corridor. Southbound I-65 remains narrowed to a single lane between Chestnut and Arthur streets, while northbound I-65 between Crittenden Drive and Broadway faces overnight lane reductions.
Bridge Replacements Remain on Track for March 2027
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet reports that while the bulk of bridge deck construction is finished, heavy labor persists underneath the elevated highway structure. The broader initiative aims to replace aging infrastructure, specifically targeting bridges over Kentucky Street, Brook Street, Hill Street, the CSX tracks, and Burnett Avenue.
According to official scheduling released by project authorities, all remaining construction tasks required to fully replace these overpasses remain on track for completion in March 2027. Drivers looking for real-time adjustments can monitor regional updates through the I-65 Central Corridor Project portal or follow announcements via KYTC District 5 communication channels.
