Fremont Resident Charged Following Assault on Newark Councilmember
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has filed a felony charge of battery causing serious bodily injury against 31-year-old Rosario Lopez of Fremont, following an alleged attack on Newark City Councilmember Eve Marie Little. The incident, which took place on October 25, has drawn significant public attention after Little detailed the encounter on social media.
According to reporting by KQED, the confrontation occurred while Councilmember Little was speaking with a group of people regarding upcoming park improvements. In her account of the event, Little stated that she was approached from behind, knocked to the ground, and repeatedly struck in the face. Newark Police Officer Anthony Piquette noted in an arrest declaration that surveillance footage captured the incident, describing the assault as “seemingly unprovoked.”
Newark Police Arrest Suspect Using Camera Technology
Following the 911 call placed after the assault, local authorities acted quickly to identify the suspect. A witness at the scene reportedly followed the vehicle used by the assailant to flee the area. Law enforcement utilized Flock Safety camera technology to track the car, which was registered to Lopez. Newark police subsequently arrested the suspect on October 29.
While the attack involved a public official, investigators have stated there is currently no evidence that the assault was motivated by Little’s position on the City Council. When addressing questions regarding a potential motive, Little suggested on social media that the incident may have stemmed from a misunderstanding involving a bystander at the park. Little wrote, “I’m not 100% sure but it looks like the girlfriend was jealous that I was talking to her boyfriend along with the 13 other guys about Park improvements.”

This assessment aligns with statements from authorities who have found no connection between the victim’s professional duties and the violence that transpired. The case remains under the jurisdiction of the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office as the legal process moves forward.
