Teasing Seattle Through Local Artistry and Maritime Culture

“They had picked that up from our brand because we’re nautical and because we have Scandinavian heritage,” Kraken Vice President of Brand and Entertainment Heidi Wiggan told NHL.com. “For the Kraken, that scrimshaw was an important component of storytelling.”

To roll out the new design, the organization bypassed traditional promotional campaigns in favor of local creators who reimagined Seattle. Wiggan explained that the idea relied on artists “remixing their own mediums to help tease out our remix jersey.”

Photographer Kristopher Shinn, known for documenting the Washington State Ferry System, shot a teaser campaign aboard one of the vessels and inside the terminal building. The team also collaborated with local hip-hop artist Oble Reed. In his teaser video, Reed described his deep connection to the city, noting that “Seattle puts me front and center.”

Custom Design Meets the New Color Scheme

Custom jersey designer StitchGod, whose clients include Josh Naylor, partnered with the franchise on a teaser video showcasing a “Scramble Jersey” featuring a compilation of everything the Kraken have ever worn. “When I look at a Kraken jersey, that’s what Seattle feels like to me,” StitchGod said in promotional footage published by NHL.com.

During the video, an off-camera voice asked the designer—who holds a known affinity for the cream color utilized in the team’s Winter Classic jersey—whether he wanted an early look at the Remix jersey, which incorporates elements of that same color scheme. After viewing it off-camera, StitchGod declared, “This is one of the sharpest jerseys on the planet.”

Fans and collectors gained full access to view the complete design starting Monday. Wiggan expressed confidence in the public reception. “I think when people see it, they’re really going to love it,” Wiggan told NHL.com.
