Séamus Coleman Weighs International Future Ahead of Euro 2028

Former Everton captain Séamus Coleman remains undecided on his playing future at both club and international levels, keeping the door open for a potential return to the Republic of Ireland setup. RTE.ie reported that the 38-year-old, currently without a club, was omitted from Heimir Hallgrímsson’s UEFA Nations League squad for the autumn fixtures as speculation mounted regarding his retirement.

Hallgrímsson has maintained that he remains keen on keeping Coleman in his plans. However, comments made by the Donegal man in recent weeks have cast doubt on that possibility.

Coleman Hints at Retirement During Recent Media Appearances

Speaking last week on The Overlap Fan Debate in conversation with Jamie Carragher, Coleman hinted that he was leaning toward retirement. I don’t want to completely draw a line in the sand, as I said I’ve been keeping fit, Coleman said. But it’s edging towards that way – and happily as well.

On Monday, Coleman appeared as a pundit for Sky Sports’ coverage of Newcastle United against Everton, where expectations were high that he would confirm his retirement. Instead, he maintained his stance that no final decision has been made.

I said I’ve not drawn a line in the sand completely on it because I know the Ireland manager would be keen to have me around if I was fit, and obviously that’s still something I’m thinking about, Coleman told Sky Sports. But I’m really enjoying not doing anything at the minute, being with my family and enjoying these little bits (of punditry) as well.

Pundit Reactions on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast

Reacting to Coleman’s comments on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast, Keith Treacy suggested that the veteran is increasingly likely to call time on his career despite the temptation of featuring at Euro 2028 as a host nation.

I think once you come out of those footballing circles and like Séamus is saying, he’s had Halloween at home with the family, you do start to soften, Treacy told the RTÉ Soccer Podcast. I think it’s a sign of how well this Irish group have done over the last couple of months that I can probably say if Séamus wants to go, we can let him go.

Treacy noted the physical demands placed on players in the English Championship or lower tiers, where a Saturday-to-Tuesday schedule is relentless. He pointed out that Coleman has dealt with serious career-ending injuries throughout his career. So the fact that he stepped away from it and seems to be enjoying it, I think we’ve probably seen the last of Séamus Coleman, Treacy added.

Also speaking on the podcast, Alan Cawley highlighted that the distance to Euro 2028—nearly two years away—makes continuing even more difficult.

Meanwhile, former manager Declan Devine suggested that if Coleman does end his playing career, ideally he could remain involved with the Irish squad in a coaching or mentoring capacity, provided it is financially feasible.

I think for the future generations and the younger generation of players in the squad, having Séamus Coleman talking in your ear can only be a positive thing, Devine said on the podcast. And hopefully if he does retire and that’s the way it’s going to end, then hopefully we’ll still see him in a Republic of Ireland tracksuit in the games to come.
