Shapiro and Garrity Present Economic Plans in Separate Interviews

Pa. Gubernatorial Race Heats Up as Candidates Clash Over Economy, Tax Policy

Philadelphia (WPVI) — With Election Day 2026 looming, Pennsylvania’s gubernatorial race has turned into a high-stakes battle over economic direction, with Republican challenger Stacy Garrity and Democratic incumbent Josh Shapiro offering starkly different visions for the state’s future. As polls show Shapiro leading by 20 points, Garrity is pushing to reframe the narrative, arguing that the governor’s policies have failed middle-class families and environmental priorities alike.

Shapiro, who has held office since 2023, emphasized his record of cutting taxes 10 times during his tenure, while blaming federal policies for rising costs. “Every Pennsylvania family is paying 3,100 bucks more a year because of tariffs and this war with Iran with higher fuel prices,” he said in an interview with Action News’ Matt O’Donnell. “But I also know we’ve been able to cut taxes here. Why do I need four more years? Because I’m going to continue to cut taxes, continue to put money back in people’s pockets.”

The Tax Burden Debate

Garrity, Pennsylvania’s state treasurer and a former member of the state Senate, countered that Shapiro’s claims ignore the state’s broader fiscal challenges. “We have the fifth highest tax burden in the nation,” she argued in her interview with Action News’ Tamala Edwards. “And what that means is a family making $70,000 in Pennsylvania pays $3,000 more every single year in taxes than the same family making $70,000 in Florida.”

Her campaign has highlighted a 25% higher inflation rate in Pennsylvania compared to the national average, a statistic that aligns with recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Garrity described her focus as fixing the system to help families and encourage growth.

Garrity and Shapiro Debate Data Center Policy

The race has also centered on the role of data centers in Pennsylvania’s energy and land use policies. Garrity accused Shapiro of failing to protect natural resources, citing the rapid expansion of tech infrastructure. “What I did, what a leader should do, is get the stakeholders around the table, which he didn’t do,” she said, referencing her own plans to prioritize community input on land and water use.

Shapiro defended his approach, citing executive actions taken in 2026 to regulate data center projects. “Probably more than 90 of them are dead now, and the other 10 have to go through a local ordinance process to determine if they’ll even get a hearing,” he said.

Candidates Clash over Trump Influence and Legal Challenges

The influence of former Donald Trump looms large in the race. Garrity, a vocal Trump ally, accused Shapiro of using legal challenges to advance political agendas. “The governor has sued this administration over 26 times, using our taxpayer dollars. Think about if we had a little cooperation,” she said. Shapiro, in turn, painted Garrity as a “100% MAGA” candidate who would prioritize ideology over practical governance.

What It Means for Voters

For Pennsylvania’s millions of registered voters, the stakes are clear.

For now, Shapiro’s lead holds, but Garrity’s campaign has succeeded in forcing a national conversation about the cost of living and the role of state leadership.
