Southern Connecticut State Volleyball Dominates SNHU in Three-Set Sweep
The Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) Owls delivered a commanding performance, sweeping the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) Penmen 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 in Manchester, New Hampshire, according to The Associated Press. The victory marked SCSU’s 12th sweep of the season, solidifying their position in the Northeast 10 Conference and showcasing the standout contributions of Sydney Bennett and Kerrigan Habing.
The Power of Precision
Bennett and Habing each tallied 11 kills, with Bennett hitting a blistering .733 from the middle of the court and adding 13 points, including two solo blocks. Habing, who took a team-high 31 swings, contributed 12 points, an ace, and four digs. Their efficiency was a stark contrast to SNHU’s .072 hitting percentage, which paled in comparison to SCSU’s .222. The Owls’ offensive discipline—33 kills, 13 attack errors on 90 swings—highlighted their ability to capitalize on opportunities while minimizing mistakes.
Setter Kimberli Mitchell orchestrated the offense with 25 assists, complemented by three kills on eight error-free swings. Her 7 points, including three aces and a block, showed she was the playmaker. Meanwhile, Sarah Henault’s nine digs and Victoria Pascual’s eight digs and two aces anchored the back row, ensuring SCSU’s passing remained unshakable.
The Turning Point in the Third Set
The third set decided the match. After SNHU briefly led 4-1, SCSU rallied with a Bennett kill and a three-point surge from Habing, seizing a 6-5 advantage. The Penmen clawed back to tie the set at 6, but Bennett’s block on the next point put the Owls ahead for good. Mianna Brown, who entered during the third set, delivered three kills, while a 6-0 run powered by Mitchell’s serve extended SCSU’s lead to 14-7. Despite a late 5-0 run by SNHU, SCSU’s resilience sealed the match with a Pascual ace.
Their consistency this year—15-7 overall, 4-3 in conference—suggests a team with a strong record.
The Road Ahead: Honoring Heroes and Rising Stars
SCSU’s final regular-season games will be played at home, beginning with a “Serve and Honor Night” on November 3 against Pace University. The event will recognize veterans, military personnel, and first responders, blending athletic competition with civic pride. The Owls will then host Franklin Pierce on November 6 for Senior Night, a chance to celebrate their graduating players.
For SNHU, the loss highlights the need for adjustments, particularly in reducing attack errors.
The Devil’s Advocate: Is the Sweep a Fluke?
SCSU’s ability to dominate across three sets speaks to their depth. The Owls’ 6-3 block advantage and 1-8 reception error rate against SNHU’s 8 reception errors further validate their superiority.
SCSU’s upcoming games against Pace and Franklin Pierce are their final regular-season matches.
