Southwest Airlines Cuts Ten Nonstop Routes for Early 2027
Southwest Airlines has upended its schedule for the first quarter of 2027 by dropping or suspending ten nonstop routes, trimming frequencies by anywhere from 32% to 93%. The schedule adjustments, uncovered through routine filings submitted to data providers like OAG and Cirium Diio, reflect the current high fuel price. What makes the mid-stream revision unusual is the timing, as pointed out by Enilria, which focuses on airline network changes and data analysis.
The cuts hit the carrier’s Hawaii and San Diego portfolios especially hard. February, which is usually the first or second worst-performing month for airlines, absorbs the brunt of the cancellations. Across several of the affected city pairs, flights vanish entirely for the month of February before making partial returns in March.
The Hawaii Inter-Island Slump
No route faces a steeper retreat than the operations from Kahului to Kona and Kahului to Lihue. The inter-island links will see their schedules slashed by 93%, terminating completely on January 5—two months or so sooner than was previously anticipated. The numbers help explain why. According to the US Department of Transportation, the route carried 64,324 round-trip passengers in the 12 months to July 2026, yet filled only 50.2% of its available seats.
In contrast, Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian’s 717s operate three times daily, while Southern Airways Express’ Cessnas have two daily flights.
| Route | Previous Q1 2027 Plan | New Q1 2027 Plan | Flights Cut |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kahului to Kona | Daily through March 10 | Daily until January 5, with no services planned beyond then | -93% |
| Kahului to Lihue | Daily through March 10 | Daily until January 5, with no services planned beyond then | -93% |
| Pittsburgh to San Diego | Up to daily through March 10 | January 2–4 only. Returns in June | -88% |
| Las Vegas to Hilo | Up to daily throughout January | January 2–4 (daily), no flights in February, then from March 13 onwards (two weekly) | -75% |
| Omaha to New York LaGuardia | Daily through March 10 | January 1–5 only (daily), with no flights planned beyond then | -92% |
Other recent additions to the route map are also feeling the pinch. The Las Vegas to Hilo service, inaugurated on August 6, 2026, to span 2,315 nautical miles (4,287 km) using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, is seeing a 75% reduction in flights for early 2027. Similarly, the Omaha to New York LaGuardia route launched in 2026 is being cut back by 92%, with flights restricted to just the first five days of January before being pulled entirely for the rest of the quarter.
