Two Fatal E-Bike and E-Scooter Crashes in Chicago Spark Safety Concerns

“These deaths are tragic and drivers need to be very careful and very aware,” Molly Hart, a spokesperson for AAA, said following a pair of fatal collisions involving micro-mobility devices in Chicago.

The most recent incident occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. on Friday, November 6, 2026, when a 67-year-old man riding an e-bike collided with an SUV at the intersection of Peterson and Jersey Avenue on the city’s Northwest Side, ABC7 Chicago reported. The man was transported to St. Francis Hospital, where he later died. Investigators noted that the driver of the SUV was cited for failure to reduce speed.

This fatality follows closely on the heels of another deadly accident in Bridgeport. Police said a 39-year-old man riding an e-scooter died after a collision with a Chicago police patrol vehicle shortly after midnight on Thursday. Police stated the marked vehicle was traveling north on Princeton Avenue when it came into contact with the stand‑up electric scooter at 32nd Street. An officer on the scene described the victim as having “massive head wounds” and “lots of blood loss” during a 911 call, imploring dispatchers to send medical help immediately.

Two fatal collisions spark safety concerns

Chicago police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the Bridgeport scooter collision and the Northwest Side e-bike crash.

Molly Hart of AAA noted that e-bikes and e-scooters have seen a surge in popularity across all age groups. She specifically highlighted that senior citizens are increasingly turning to e-bikes, often because they lack a personal vehicle or find car ownership unaffordable, using the devices for essential trips to grocery stores and doctor’s appointments.

“I am deeply saddened by the fatal accident that occurred this morning involving a vehicle and an e-bike. The circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are still under investigation, but this is heartbreaking news for the entire 50th Ward community,” said Alderman Debra Silverstein, who represents the ward where the e-bike crash occurred.

New regulations arrive in January

Earlier this year, Governor JB Pritzker signed legislation that establishes specific age requirements, speed limits, and designated operating areas for e-bikes and e-scooters. These new rules are scheduled to take effect in January.

In the Bridgeport incident, both officers in the police vehicle were taken to a local hospital for medical treatment following the contact with the 39-year-old scooter rider.
