UConn Forward Na’jai Hines Lands on Karl Malone Award Watch List

UConn men’s basketball player Na’jai Hines was named to the 20-player watch list for the 2027 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forward in college basketball each season. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the selection, placing the sophomore transfer among early contenders for national positional honors.

The Naismith Hall of Fame will narrow the watch list to 10 semifinalists in February before selecting five finalists the following month. For Dan Hurley’s squad, Hines’ inclusion adds to a crowded preseason ledger. According to uconnhuskies.com, guards Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins alongside small forward Colben Landrew earned spots on their respective positional watch lists earlier in the week.

Positional Designation and Roster Expectations

Grouping Hines at the power forward spot came as an unexpected turn. The Seton Hall transfer is projected to start at center for Connecticut, while Nik Khamenia stands as the team’s likely starting power forward yet missed the initial 20-player cut.

The 6-foot-11 big man arrives in Storrs carrying heavy expectations. He is tasked with matching the production of recent first-round NBA Draft picks Donovan Clingan and Tarris Reed Jr. Last season with the Pirates, Hines averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds across 31 contests while recording a BIG EAST-best 2.2 blocks per game, totaling 69 blocks. He posted the nation’s second-highest block rate and carved out a role as a top-200 rebounder on both ends of the floor, though foul trouble limited him to 42.3 percent of available minutes.

Preseason Performance and Exhibition Hurdles

Those contrasting statistical traits surfaced quickly during UConn’s first three exhibition games. Hines averaged 11.3 points and 5.3 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per contest, shooting 60 percent from the field and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line while collecting five blocked shots. At the same time, he picked up multiple first-half fouls in matchups against Michigan State and Purdue, running into particular trouble against 7-foot-4 Purdue center Daniel Jacobsen.

As the Huskies prepare for the regular season, the open question remains how effectively Hines can maintain his elite rim protection and high-efficiency scoring while staying on the floor against elite frontcourts.
