The Utah Utes entered the game carrying an undefeated record. On Halloween, Morgan Scalley’s unit delivered a resounding 49-25 victory over Cincinnati, erasing any lingering anxiety about a road stumble following their previous week’s win over Houston.
Halftime Domination in Ohio
The contest was effectively decided before the intermission. Utah surged to a 42-6 lead by halftime, scoring on all four offensive possessions and adding two more touchdowns from the defense. Devon Dampier directed the attack with clinical precision, completing 76% of his passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.
Dampier pointed to a deliberate shift in preparation dictated by Scalley during the week. The coaching staff made it clear that a letdown after defeating Houston would prove fatal.
“When we win games, we need to learn from it,” Dampier said. “When we win games, we need to come back the next week with more energy.”
That energy manifested immediately. Dampier’s highlight of the afternoon arrived with 28 seconds remaining in the third quarter when he connected with tight end Hunter Andrews on a 59-yard scoring strike. Andrews finished as the primary target, hauling in five receptions for 112 yards and two touchdowns as offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven utilized twelve different pass catchers throughout the matchup.
Extending a Two-Decade Defensive Tradition
While the offense dictated the pace, Utah’s defense maintained a remarkable program tradition. The Utes extended their streak of recording an interception return for a touchdown to 23 seasons, dating back to 2004.
Late in the first half, as Cincinnati quarterback JC French IV scanned the secondary, cornerback Elijah “Scooby” Davis stepped in front of the route and sprinted 39 yards into the end zone. Safety Rabbit Evans added another defensive score by recovering a fumble for a touchdown with a little over 10 seconds left in the opening period.
The two defensive scores served as a birthday present for defensive coordinator Colton Swan, whose birthday coincided with the Halloween matchup. Scalley acknowledged the performance after the final whistle, noting the execution that kept the program’s pick-six streak alive.
Late-Game Frustration on the Brink
With the outcome settled by the fourth quarter, sophomore quarterback Byrd Ficklin entered under center to guide a late drive. Ficklin went 1 of 2 from the pocket and contributed 20 rushing yards on five carries, steering the offense to the threshold of the end zone.
Cincinnati’s defense stiffened on fourth-and-goal, stopping Ficklin short of the plane to force a turnover on downs. The quarterback showed visible frustration on the bench as the clock wound down, prompting Dampier to offer words of consolation.
The In-State Collision Awaiting Next Week
With their record standing at 8-0, the Utes turn their immediate attention toward a rivalry matchup. Utah will host No. 8 BYU at 10 a.m. MST next Saturday in Salt Lake City.
