“Vic is a beast,” Spurs forward Devin Vassell said after the game. “He has shown he’s the best player in the world over and over.”

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama etched his name alongside two former MVPs during a 117-111 overtime victory against the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City, according to reports from both the San Antonio Express-News and Yahoo Sports. The 7-foot-4 center put up a stat line of 36 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, three steals, two blocks, and four 3-pointers across 39 minutes of action.

That particular combination of statistics has happened only three times in the history of the NBA. Karl-Anthony-Towns reached the milestone in 2019, and Joel Embiid achieved the feat in 2023.

Beyond that rare single-game threshold, Wembanyama also notched his 13th career game recording at least 20 points, three 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. That ties him with LeBron James for career games reaching those specific benchmarks.

Entering a home matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Wembanyama holds season averages of 25.0 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks per contest.

“I’m expecting him to come out every night and dominate games, and when he doesn’t, I’m on him and so is the rest of the team,” Vassell said. “So when he has games like this, I don’t want to say it’s normal, but we expect it from him and he expects it from himself.”

Spurs Face Unusual Early-Season Schedule Spacing

The early-season schedule has brought unusual spacing for San Antonio. Playing the Utah matchup marked the third time this season the Spurs endured a two-day break between games.

San Antonio head coach Mitch Johnson acknowledged mixed feelings regarding the scheduling quirk, calling it a funky one. He noted that while teams often crave rest, squads returning from a long training camp and offseason simply want to play. Johnson added, We probably always want what you don’t have in that moment. But after a long camp and an offseason, you want to play. The two days off, we would take it probably after 50 games when we’re a little bit more tired. But if we had a bunch of games, I’d be saying the opposite. So I’m not going to sit here and act otherwise. Looking ahead, the team faces another two-day gap on December 1 and 2, sitting between an away game in Milwaukee and a home contest against Toronto.

“Yeah, we got 82 games, 41 at home, 41 on the road, a few in the neutral site, but it’s all the same,” Johnson said. “I think that stuff you got to not give too much power and control to. The schedule isn’t something you can control. It should not have any effect on outcomes or behaviors or circumstances.” Johnson further noted that allowing those external things to seep in creates cracks in the consistency of the team’s operation and execution.
