Spain declared an unprecedented national emergency on Thursday, July 24, 2026, as wildfires surged near Madrid and in the neighboring province of Ávila.
The scale of the disaster has shifted the command structure of the response. By declaring a national emergency, the Spanish government placed firefighting operations under the direct control of the Ministry of the Interior, a move designed to accelerate the mobilization of resources. This includes the deployment of over 270 emergency personnel and 40 ground units, supported by water-bombing aircraft and Spain’s military emergency unit.

The fire’s proximity to the capital has created a visible and olfactory crisis in the city. Thick gray smoke has blanketed western Madrid, with the scent of burning forests reaching the streets of the city center. In the town of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, local residents reported that flames and dense smoke completely surrounded the town, forcing many elderly residents to abandon their homes.
The situation was further complicated by the merging of two separate fires on Friday, creating a single massive blaze that nearly converged with a third fire in the neighboring Castile and León region. The volatility of the perimeter led Carlos Novillo, an emergency management official for the Madrid regional government, to tell reporters on Friday that the fire reached its peak… and it is impossible to extinguish it.
While some towns like Chapinería saw more than 150 evacuees sheltered in emergency centers, other municipalities—including Villa del Prado, Pelayos de la Presa, and Aldea del Fresno—were also engulfed in the emergency zone. Reports from several municipalities indicate that homes have been either damaged or completely destroyed.
The Saturday Wind Threat and Recovery Efforts

However, that optimism is tempered by a forecast for Saturday, July 25. Martín warned that the day would be difficult because winds are expected to strengthen in the morning with erratic gusts that could reignite or spread the flames.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to attend a coordination meeting for rescue operations on Saturday in the village of Cenicientos, which sits in the heart of the fire zone, before speaking to the media.
A National Pattern of Destruction in 2026
The Madrid fires are not an isolated incident but part of one of the most severe wildfire seasons Spain has seen in recent years.
Prime Minister Sánchez noted that Spain has recorded approximately 22 major fires this year. He observed that the current burned area is roughly equivalent to the average annual losses seen over the last decade, underscoring the impact of climate change on the frequency and intensity of these events.
The human cost has been severe. In the current month alone, wildfires have claimed at least 13 lives, including victims of a fatal blaze in Almería. These new hotspots around Madrid add to a series of major fires already straining national resources in Guadalajara, Aragon, and Andalusia.
While some residents in that region have begun returning to their villages, the broader national risk remains critical. The Spanish Meteorological Agency maintains that the risk of new fires remains very high to extreme across most of the country and the Balearic Islands, driven by dry storms and dust-laden winds from North Africa.
The immediate threat now centers on the Mediterranean coast, where a new heatwave is expected to push temperatures between 42 and 44 degrees Celsius before a temporary dip at the end of the week.
