Hedge-fund titan Ken Griffin is committing a historic $3 billion gift to Carnegie Mellon University, funding a new campus in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood and backing major technology initiatives in Pittsburgh in the largest individual donation to higher education.
Building a 35-Acre Technology Hub in Wynwood
The bulk of the capital — specifically $2 billion — will establish Carnegie Mellon University Miami on a 35-acre site in Miami’s Wynwood district. Known for its expertise in computer science, artificial intelligence, and robotics, the Pittsburgh-based institution plans to begin construction in 2027. Pending regulatory approvals, the campus aims to welcome its inaugural class of students in 2028.
Once fully operational, the South Florida site is projected to support over 3,500 students across undergraduate, master’s, and PhD programs. The academic community will also include nearly 300 faculty members and more than 600 staff personnel.
Reimagining Higher Education Around Societal Challenges
Rather than relying strictly on conventional academic majors, the Miami campus intends to structure both teaching and research around large-scale modern problems.
- Human health and biological discovery
- National security and strategic capabilities
- Energy and climate resilience
- Advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation
To tackle these complex fields, the campus layout incorporates dedicated spaces for industry research laboratories and venture studios. Students, researchers, and partners from government and private industry will collaborate directly alongside one another, integrating humanities, arts, and design throughout the scientific process.

Dividing the Historic $3 Billion Contribution
The remaining one billion dollars from Griffin’s record-setting gift remains anchored in Pennsylvania.
| Allocation Target | Funding Amount | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science | $500 million | Direct investment in the newly renamed computing school |
| University Highest Priorities | $500 million | Flexible support for institutional needs in Pittsburgh |

Securing Citadel Founder’s Legacy in South Florida
