College football history was made Saturday, October 17, 2026, as five of the top seven teams in the AP Top 25 poll lost on the same day. The unprecedented collapse of the sport’s elite programs—including No. 1 Georgia, No. 6 Alabama, and No. 7 Texas—shuffled the national landscape and playoff projections.
An Unprecedented Saturday of Upsets
The chaos of Week 7 left the college football world reeling, as top-tier programs struggled to navigate what some observers dubbed extreme rivalry hangovers.
According to Sportradar, it was the first time in history that five of the top seven teams in the AP Top 25 lost on the same day during the regular season. The last time a similar level of upheaval occurred was January 2, 1989, when five of the top eight teams were defeated.

The Southeastern Conference was at the epicenter of the disruption. No. 1 Georgia fell 27-24 to unranked Auburn, while No. 6 Alabama was defeated 26-10 by No. 14 Tennessee. No. 7 Texas also stumbled, losing 27-24 to Florida at home.
Georgia, Alabama, and Texas Falters
Georgia’s loss to Auburn was particularly jarring. The Bulldogs had won 93 straight home games against unranked opponents entering the day. It was Auburn’s first win in Athens since 2005.

For Alabama, the 26-10 loss to Tennessee represented back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2013. Alabama was held to just 201 total yards by Tennessee defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ unit. Meanwhile, Texas suffered consecutive regular-season losses. Quarterback was sacked five times, struggling alongside projected first-round NFL draft picks Trevor Goosby and Cam Coleman. The offensive woes have placed significant pressure on head coach Steve Sarkisian regarding his play-calling duties.
Ohio State Ends Indiana Winning Streak
Outside the SEC, other playoff contenders also faced significant hurdles. Indiana saw its 22-game winning streak end in a 27-24 loss to Ohio State. Following the game, Indiana coach Curt Cignetti described the result as a hard one to swallow.

Ohio State’s victory came at a high cost. Head coach Ryan Day confirmed that starting quarterback Julian Sayin suffered an injury that will sideline him for “several weeks.” For Indiana, it was their first loss since falling to Notre Dame in the 2024 College Football Playoff, ending a 19-game home winning streak. Elsewhere, No. 2 Notre Dame fell to BYU. The upset was fueled by a standout performance from BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who excelled against the stout Notre Dame defense.
The Path Forward for Playoff Contenders
After beating rival Florida State 43-35 in a double-overtime classic, Miami is poised to take the top poll spot. As the season enters its second half, teams are left with little room for error. Texas faces a high-stakes prime-time matchup against Ole Miss in Week 8, which is considered an elimination game for the Longhorns.

Elsewhere in the coaching ranks, former NFL coach Bill Belichick has his team performing well, while Billy Napier’s James Madison Dukes remain 7-0 and favorites to win the Sun Belt. As the College Football Playoff seeding forecasts shuffle, the focus shifts to whether teams like Georgia can recover from their rare mulligan or if the current chaos will redefine the 12-team playoff field.
