Alexis Mac Allister scored twice and Rio Ngumoha added two assists as Liverpool recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Villarreal 4-3 on October 20, 2026. The Champions League victory at Anfield maintained Liverpool’s perfect start to the European campaign despite a shaky defensive display.

Andoni Iraola's Liverpool capitalize on defensive errors

Anfield witnessed a disastrous opening half-hour as Liverpool fell behind by two goals against old Athletic Bilbao team-mates Andoni Iraola and Iñigo Pérez. The rotation also handed Trey Nyoni a second successive Champions League start, with Ryan Gravenberch moving forward into Wirtz’s number 10 role.

Liverpool’s makeshift lineup struggled to find any rhythm early on. Virgil van Dijk committed an uncharacteristic error in the fourth minute, misjudging a long clearance from Renato Veiga and steering his header directly to Georges Mikautadze, who coolly slotted the ball under Alisson Becker to open the scoring.

Van Dijk’s loose touch nearly allowed the Georgia international forward through on goal moments earlier before Jérémy Jacquet raced across to shut down the threat.

Villarreal doubled their advantage shortly before the half-hour mark through a fluid team move. Pape Gueye, Alberto Moleiro, and Nathan Saliba combined to pick out Sergi Cardona sprinting down the left flank, and the fullback beat Alisson with a composed finish past a high defensive line.

Mac Allister and Ngumoha Spark Liverpool Comeback Win

Stung by the deficit, Liverpool began their fightback before half-time when Mac Allister rose to meet a Kostas Tsimikas corner, steering a powerful header past Peter Gulacsi. With the final kick of the opening half, Rio Ngumoha clipped a cross toward the far post that Cardona allowed to bounce, permitting on-loan defender Ronald Araújo to head home the equaliser.

Ngumoha took total control of the right wing, using his blistering pace to tear past the Villarreal defense before cutting back a low pass for Mac Allister to smash a shot in off the underside of the crossbar.

Wirtz capped the turnaround just minutes later, drilling a clinical left-footed finish inside the far corner after combining with Tsimikas and Cody Gakpo to register his first goal of the season.

Tani Oluwaseyi Sets Up A Nervy Finish

Despite the offensive surge, Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities lingered throughout the night. Tani Oluwaseyi scored for Villarreal in the 87th minute, converting a delivery from Ayoze Pérez to reduce the deficit to 4-3 and ensure a tense conclusion at Anfield.

The hosts ultimately weathered the late storm to secure all three points, moving alongside Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Champions League table with nine points from three matches.

In the first half, especially the first 30-35 minutes, they have been much better than us. In the second half, especially the first 30-35 minutes, we were much better. I think when we’ve been under pressure and we had to go and leave everything, I think we’ve answered well. When we’ve relaxed a little bit at the beginning of the game, or when you score the 4-2, you think, ‘ok it’s done’, it has cost us. You cannot relax.
