Police and Federal Response on Albert Avenue
Law enforcement agencies descended on the northeast side of Columbus after multiple callers reported gunfire around 2:11 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026. The shooting took place in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, an area featuring a cluster of two-story apartment buildings adjacent to the Alrahma Mosque.
Initial reports from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives indicated that agents were responding to a shooting incident at the mosque itself. However, local police later clarified that the violence occurred in the neighboring apartment complex’s parking lot rather than inside or on the grounds of the religious facility. Columbus Division of Police spokesperson Nicole Jaros noted that dispatchers received multiple calls reporting gunfire at the location shortly after 2 p.m.

Investigators stated that an unrelated funeral was underway inside the mosque at the time of the shooting. Mourners spilled out into the street. Funeral goers and other community members spilled out into the street amid the gunfire, leading to a chaotic environment characterized by arguments, shoving, and a large crowd that required numerous officers to bring under control.
Dispute Outside the Apartment Complex
Authorities reported that the fatal encounter stemmed from a dispute involving several individuals in the residential complex parking lot. Investigators believe the violence was an isolated altercation and found no indication that religion or the mosque motivated the gunfire.
