U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared that Iran has lost control of the Strait of Hormuz, while Vice President J.D. Vance demanded curbs on nuclear enrichment.

Diplomatic efforts to end the seven-month conflict between the United States and Iran remain frozen as Washington ties any broader ceasefire directly to verifiable limits on Tehran’s nuclear program. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking during a visit to Athens on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, stated that Iran has passed up multiple opportunities to reach an agreement with Washington regarding its nuclear capabilities.

The absence of a diplomatic breakthrough keeps the strategic waterway at the center of commercial and military friction. While commercial vessels navigating the crucial corridor now rely heavily on U.S. naval protection, senior administration officials maintain that Washington holds the upper hand in the region.

Marco Rubio Declares Iran Has Lost Complete Control of the Strait of Hormuz

Addressing reporters during a visit to Athens, Rubio asserted that the Iranian regime has lost complete control of the Strait of Hormuz. Rubio pointed to rebounding shipment volumes as proof that maritime trade is returning to normal patterns.

Rubio further argued that the Iranians are much less powerful militarily than when the war began in late February, following joint attacks by the U.S. and Israel on military and nuclear sites belonging to the Ayatollah regime. He accused Tehran of attempting to build a conventional military capability so massive that it would eventually become “untouchable,” making it difficult for the U.S. or its allies to act against its nuclear program.

Vice President J.D. Vance Demands Meaningful Reductions in Uranium Enrichment

The renewed diplomatic standoff follows comments made earlier in the week by Vice President J.D. Vance, who insisted that any agreement to resolve the seven-month conflict must include a meaningful reduction in nuclear enrichment capacity. Vance questioned why Tehran requires high-grade nuclear fuel if its atomic program remains strictly peaceful.

“If you don’t want a nuclear weapon, then why do you need 60% enriched fuel? And if you want to show commitment to not building a nuclear weapon, don’t build highly enriched fuel. That’s a very basic threshold issue.”

Vance emphasized in an interview with Reuters that the U.S. would not accept assurances of future reductions and requires concrete action. He stated, We’re not going to trade words for actions. In response, a senior Iranian official involved in indirect negotiations told Reuters that U.S. requests and ideas remain at odds with the positions of the Islamic Republic, stating that while enrichment details can be discussed later, Iran will never give up its right to enrich.

This deadlock persists despite reports that Iran and the U.S. have exchanged proposals in recent weeks to end the conflict and establish arrangements for the strategic waterway. President Donald Trump last week denied reports that he had offered sanctions relief to Iran in exchange for nuclear concessions.

Economic Pressures Mount as Iran’s Oil Loadings Stop Entirely

Washington’s broader pressure campaign is visibly straining Tehran’s financial lifelines. Rubio alleged that every dollar received by radical Shia clerics is spent on Hezbollah and Hamas rather than improving domestic living conditions.

According to the market intelligence platform Kpler, Homayoun Falakshahi reported on Thursday that no oil was loaded at Iranian export terminals during September, which represents the first total cessation of Iran’s oil loadings since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Because the final payments for Iranian oil currently at sea may not be collected until December, revenue from these shipments is expected to vanish by year’s end, forcing the Iranian regime to go without its traditional primary source of hard currency. Iranian state television reported that Mohsen Paknejad, the oil minister since August 2024, has submitted his resignation in recent days.

Concurrently, energy markets have felt the wider ripples of regional instability. This is exacerbated by China also reducing exports of diesel and other refined fuels.

Tehran Dismisses Dialogue as U.S. Weighs Additional Military Contingencies

For his part, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that negotiations with the U.S. lack meaning since the most recent round of talks failed to produce results. While speaking in Tehran with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, Pezeshkian remarked that Tehran’s issue with the United States is that every time they come to the negotiating table, war is immediately imposed on us, noting that they have attacked us three times after talks.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon refuses to rule out further escalations. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned Iran that US President Donald Trump remains determined to prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons, advising Tehran that it must either give up its nuclear ambitions or face further action from the Americans. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Hegseth stated: Iran will never have a nuclear bomb. Full stop.

Hegseth maintained that Tehran’s military options would remain limited due to the level of damage sustained by its economy, its defense industrial base, and its capacity to rebuild. He claimed the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is ironclad, stating, They don’t control the Strait of Hormuz, we do. Hegseth asserted that Iran’s naval and air capabilities had been so extensively degraded that it does not have a navy, fast boats, and has got no air force, and that incredible damage has been done to their ability to see and sense the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright added that there are no guarantees in conflict regarding further attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure. To mitigate possible disruptions, the Trump administration is preparing by increasing US production and refining capacity while seeking to boost fuel supplies from allies.
