The Norwegian Nobel Committee will announce the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner in Oslo on Friday, choosing from 287 nominated candidates amid heavy trading volume on international prediction markets and public lobbying by political figures.

As the Norwegian Nobel Institute prepares to reveal this year’s laureate at 11 a.m. local time, global attention centers on a field of 208 individuals and 79 organizations nominated for the 125th anniversary of the award. The winner will receive 12 million Swedish kronor, amounting to about $1.2 million.

Sudan Emergency Response Rooms and Children Advocates Lead Prediction Markets

Prediction platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi have tracked heavy trading volume approaching $2.5 million as traders weigh a fragmented field without an overwhelming favorite according to financial reports. Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms have emerged as frontrunners, capturing roughly 15% to 16% implied probability across markets.

Other leading contenders include Mykola Kuleba, the founder of Save Ukraine who has campaigned for the return of children transferred to Russia during the ongoing invasion, and the international charity Save the Children. Additional names discussed by analysts and listed by research groups include the International Space Station partnership, the Committee to Protect Journalists, the International Court of Justice, and the International Criminal Court alongside human rights advocates. The International Court of Justice, acting as the judicial body of the United Nations in The Hague, holds an implied market probability of approximately 4 percent alongside the International Criminal Court.

Save Ukraine was established in 2014 by Kuleba at the start of the conflict in eastern Ukraine and Crimea, and the organization has helped return an estimated 1,500 children from Russia and occupied territories. At the same time, Save the Children maintains a vital worldwide function in addressing and deterring the United Nations' six grave violations directed at children within conflict areas.

“I don’t know what their decision is going to be,” Trump said at the White House ahead of Friday’s announcement.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee does not publish nomination lists, keeping records sealed for 50 years to protect nominators and candidates from outside political pressure while outside figures state public nominations. The five-member committee is appointed by the Parliament of Norway and decides the winner through a simple majority vote.

The established rules mandate that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others.

Last year’s peace prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for her push for democratic transition, after which she presented her gold medal to President Trump to recognize his commitment to freedom following the removal of former President Nicolás Maduro. Looking at past background, the distinction has gone to prominent international figures such as Martin Luther King Jr. in 1964, Mikhail Gorbachev in 1990, Nelson Mandela in 1993, Barack Obama in 2009, and Malala Yousafzai in 2014, while being withheld on 19 separate occasions, primarily during times of world war.
