Gold prices in Egypt fell on Thursday, October 22, 2026, as a drop in international bullion prices outweighed the upward pressure of a domestic dollar rate which crossed the 55-pound threshold in several banks.

Local market movements on Thursday reflected a tug-of-war between declining global precious metal values and local currency shifts. International bullion tumbled more than 1.5% under pressure from rising energy costs and persistent U.S. inflation fears, which fueled market expectations that the Federal Reserve would keep interest rates higher for longer. Yet inside the domestic market, the dollar’s climb above 55 Egyptian pounds cushioned local traders against the full force of the global sell-off, allowing gram prices to stay elevated despite the drop in dollar-denominated international valuations. The dollar used in the calculations rose from 54.38 to 54.66 pounds.

How Local Gold Prices Shifted Across Karats

Retail rates across Egyptian exchange shops reflected the downward pressure during Thursday sessions. The benchmark gold gram of 21 karat—the most widely traded purity across Cairo, the Delta, and Upper Egypt—traded at 6,275 pounds, dropping 35 pounds from the previous day’s close of 6,310 pounds on October 21 down to 6,275 pounds on October 22, according to data highlighted by the platform’s tracking of market revisions. Other standard purities adjusted accordingly, with 24-karat gold resting at 7,171 pounds, 18-karat jewelry moving at 5,379 pounds, and the standard eight-gram gold coin settling at 50,200 pounds, while the ounce recorded approximately 4,082 dollars.

Even with the day’s losses, domestic prices remained closely tied to fundamental valuation formulas. Analysts at Gold Bullion noted that the persistent rise in foreign exchange rates limited the transmission of international losses to local buyers. The official exchange rate hovered near 54.60 pounds, driven higher by heavy import bills for energy and shipping as crude oil rose to more than 113 dollars per barrel. Additional capital outflows from local debt markets further amplified demand for foreign currency to settle transactions.

Global Pressures and the Shrinking Local Price Gap

On the international stage, spot gold fell 1.3% to trade near 4,085 dollars per ounce, hitting its lowest mark since October 14. December U.S. futures retreated in tandem, and December 2026 gold futures fell by 1.16%, or 48.30 dollars, to reach 4,101.70 dollars per ounce by 08:00 GMT. Market observers pointed directly to energy markets for the shift. Kelvin Wong, a senior market analyst at Oanda, explained that surging oil prices threaten to prolong inflation cycles, which in turn forces central banks to delay monetary easing.

The continued rise in oil prices may increase inflation expectations, which enhances the likelihood of interest rates remaining high for a longer period, and forms pressure on gold prices.

As international bullion fell faster than the local currency depreciated, the persistent pricing gap that had separated Egyptian retail rates from theoretical bullion values narrowed significantly. Calculations cited by industry monitors showed that the discrepancy between Egyptian retail pricing and the mathematical value of raw gold compressed to roughly 4.66 pounds per gram.

Investment Strategy Amid Market Uncertainty

For retail savers and long-term investors, the pullback offered a strategic entry window, though experts cautioned against trying to time the absolute bottom. Saeed Imbabi, executive director of the i-Sagha online trading platform, advised that current levels present a practical opportunity for phased accumulation rather than deploying full capital in a single transaction.
