Marking its twenty-fifth anniversary, Guernsey children’s charity Help a Guernsey Child has distributed over £1.2m since 2001 while responding to a rising demand for fundamental household items and living cost pressures affecting local families.

Help a Guernsey Child stated that since its creation in 2001, it has provided more than £1.2m worth of essential items, equipment, services, and support to local children and young people.

As it celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary, a Guernsey charity that raises funds to provide children with essential items has noted that families are facing changing pressures.

Charity Moves From Big Projects To Family Aid

In its early years, the charity directed financial support toward several larger community projects benefiting children.

Over time, however, the organization moved toward an increasing focus on helping individual children and families.

Alex Jenner, from Help a Guernsey Child, said: Over the past 25 years, we have seen significant changes in the types of support families require.

Jenner added that despite these developing needs, the organization’s core mission is unchanged.

That mission is to ensure that children in the Bailiwick are not disadvantaged because they lack the essentials that every child deserves.

Frontline Professionals Apply for Individual Family Grants

The charity operates through professional referrers who have direct knowledge of the children and families involved.

Applications for grants are submitted by social workers, health visitors, teachers, doctors, nurses, and other frontline professionals, and each application is considered individually by the charity’s directors.

This individual focus often involves providing items as fundamental as a bed, flooring, white goods, clothing, safety equipment, or a heating appliance, alongside specialist disability equipment and educational opportunities.

The nature of this work mirrors the pressures faced by local families.

According to the organization, these pressures include the rising cost of living and an increased demand for practical support and essential household items.

A relatively small grant at exactly the right time can make a profound difference to a child’s safety, wellbeing, education or independence.
