Apple TV releases the Mattel action comedy Matchbox: The Movie, starring John Cena as a CIA agent whose covert operation drags his childhood friends into a global conspiracy. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the streaming feature arrives globally on October 9, 2026, following a New York premiere.

Hollywood’s gold rush of adapting toy brands following the box office success of 2023’s Barbie has yielded a streaming venture that leans into nostalgia. The two-hour Apple TV film drops straight to streaming on October 9, 2026, after opening in New York on October 5, 2026, with an evening release across the Americas on October 8, 2026. Production began in Budapest in January 2025, with additional shooting taking place in Slovakia, Morocco, and Los Angeles. Matchbox the Movie is an Apple Original Film from Mattel Studios, and it goes straight to streaming on Apple TV. Matt Westbrook, celebrated for collaborating with Hargrave on the Extraction films alongside the Russo Brothers on Netflix’s The Gray Man, provided story consultation for Matchbox: The Movie, which was penned by The Family Plan scribe David Coggeshell.

John Cena Leads Spy Thriller

The story centers on Sean Walker, an undercover CIA agent working for a secret ops sub-group known as Blackthorn. Played by John Cena, Sean is a solitary operative entrusted with a high-stakes mission to retrieve a stolen nuclear warhead from a warlord and hand it over to a drug smuggler. Complications arise when he steals the weapon from undesirables and delivers it to a smuggler contact, only to have his handler Helen, portrayed by Danai Gurira, instruct him to lie low.

Sean finds himself drawn back to his small hometown of Cartersville, Ohio, after learning that his childhood mentor and mechanic, Cal Smalley—played by Bill Camp—has died. The ensemble cast also features Jessica Biel as Aimee, Sam Richardson as Crosby, Arturo Castro as Ted, Teyonah Parris as Charmaine, Corey Stoll as Deputy CIA Director Mosier, Golshifteh Farahani as Robbie, and Daniel Bernhardt as Falko.

Childhood Friends Face Nuclear Threat

Flashbacks to the late 1990s establish how Sean and his middle-school friends gathered in Smalley’s garage to play with Mattel die-cast cars, earning themselves the moniker of the Matchbox crew. As a teenager, Sean had an unrequited crush on Aimee, the mechanic’s niece, before moving away to Chicago and losing touch with his peers.

When Sean returns for Smalley’s funeral, he inadvertently ropes his estranged childhood friends into a dangerous international conspiracy. The group is drugged and taken into custody by Deputy CIA Director Mosier, who suspects Sean is a double agent responsible for the missing nuclear bomb. To clear their names and prevent global catastrophe, the group of ordinary civilians must accompany the veteran spy on a globe-trotting rescue mission. Ted, played by Castro, participates in a humorous bit attempting to duplicate Arnold Schwarzenegger’s motorcycle and shotgun maneuver originating from Terminator 2: Judgment Day, while his companions exchange tiresome quips and take down faceless thugs.

“Mosier was about to become the Director of Operations at the CIA, and he would do everything in his power to bring the situation under control. If he failed to find the warhead, then he might even disappear citizens (Sean’s friends) on unspecified charges and make it look like the warhead operation never really happened.”

Sam Hargrave Directs Stunts

Directed by Sam Hargrave, known for helming the Extraction franchise and serving as stunt coordinator for major action blockbusters, the film features large-scale vehicle chases and explosive set pieces. Hargrave utilizes his technical background to stage semi-truck crashes and race car sequences, though reviewers noted that certain moments are undermined by conspicuous digital effects.

Critical response to the 127-minute feature has been mixed. Critics pointed out formulaic script elements penned by David Coggeshall, comparing its narrative structure to a streaming action comedy akin to the Fast and the Furious franchise. At the same time, reviewers praised the comedic timing of Sam Richardson and the physical commitment of John Cena in driving the action set pieces.

How will audiences respond to the October 9, 2026 release of Matchbox: The Movie on Apple TV?
