Slinger Francisco, the legendary calypso artist known globally as the Mighty Sparrow, died in New York on Sunday at age 91 following a brief illness.
From Grand Roy to the Global Stage
Born in the coastal fishing village of Grand Roy, Grenada, in July 1935, Francisco moved as a toddler to Trinidad and Tobago in 1937 alongside his parents. He grew up in Port-of-Spain, singing in the choir at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church before being drawn into the local calypso tents during the early 1950s as a young performer.
Initially performing under the stage name Little Sparrow, he soon transformed into the Mighty Sparrow. His career exploded in 1956 with the hit song Jean and Dinah,
a witty commentary examining the social repercussions left behind by departing American servicemen stationed in the region after World War II following the conflict.
That breakout recording swept the Calypso Monarch and Road March crowns, instantly altering the Caribbean music industry by merging sharp social observations with infectious melodies and humor. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, he recorded hundreds of songs across dozens of albums, addressing politics, everyday life, and human relationships.
Honors, Legacy, and Worldwide Acclaimed Venues
Affectionately called Birdie
by friends and fans, Francisco took calypso far beyond its geographic roots. His commanding stage presence and lyrical finesse carried him to renowned international auditoriums, including New York City’s Madison Square Garden and London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Cultural historian Dr. Rudolph Ottley described the performer’s profound artistic impact on the genre to the Associated Press.
Recognized widely as the calypso king of the world,
Francisco received numerous distinctions throughout his lifetime. The government of Trinidad and Tobago honored him with national awards, including the Chaconia Gold Medal and the prestigious Order of Trinidad & Tobago. In 1987, the University of the West Indies conferred an honorary Doctor of Letters upon him.
