S-Game’s upcoming action RPG Phantom Blade Zero launches on October 29, 2026, for PC and PlayStation 5. Following extended hands-on sessions with a near-final build, global previews reveal a 25 to 30-hour runtime, thirty distinct weapons, and a unique kung-fu-punk style shaped by traditional wuxia and martial arts cinema.
After years of development and high-profile convention appearances, S-Game’s Phantom Blade Zero is finally ready to reach players. Ahead of the release, the studio hosted hands-on preview events in Beijing and Los Angeles, giving critics and content creators roughly six hours with a near-final build that covered the opening chapter and select late-game encounters.
Following appearances at events like the PlayStation Showcase in 2023 and Summer Game Fest in 2024, where the team debuted its initial demo, the studio expanded its scope considerably.
Thirty Weapons, Drunken Style Combat, and the Childhood Wooden Sword Challenge
Combat serves as the core of the experience, drawing comparisons to fast-paced action games while carving out its own identity through martial arts choreography. Donnie Yen has served as the game’s creative consultant since 2023, contributing his expertise as both a martial artist and filmmaker to help shape the combat design. Players can carry two primary weapons at once and switch between them dynamically during combat using the D-pad, maintaining momentum without breaking rhythm. The full game features 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary gear options known as Phantom Edges, each offering distinct attack strings, combos, and tactical properties. Liang noted that crafting each individual weapon required nearly a month of dedicated work and motion capture.
Among the arsenal are specialized armaments that drastically alter playstyles. One weapon found later in the game incorporates a Drunken Style mechanic. Activating it grants automatic evasion and flying sword attacks at the cost of restricted movement and blocked defense. Default controls map parrying to the left bumper and dodging to the right, with special variants triggered when enemies flash blue for brutal parry moves or red for killer dodge moves.
We’ve designed 30 different weapons, and we put our heart into each one. We want everyone to experience as many different weapons as possible, but we don’t limit how you play. You can play from start to finish with just one weapon. We also have a challenge weapon: the wooden sword from childhood. Theoretically, you can use that to finish the game. That reflects a philosophy in Chinese kung fu: when you develop your skill to the extreme, you no longer need great weapons. You just need wood to beat everyone.

From Wuxia Roots to Kung-Fu-Punk Worldbuilding
The world of Phantom Blade Zero blends traditional Chinese martial arts and wuxia culture with steampunk machinery, body modification, and cyberpunk influences—an overarching aesthetic that S-Game defines as Kung Fu Punk.

When I was in undergrad school, I studied architecture [at Yale], so I started the story with some traditional Chinese Wuxia culture mixed with some pop cultures like cyberpunk. But we didn’t have the term kung fu punk back then. We just wanted to make something cool, but I was at school at that moment, so after my graduation, I came back to China, and then tried to make something serious.

Accessibility Features and Technical Performance on High-End Hardware
Although the game incorporates challenging boss encounters, parrying mechanics, and secret-laden exploration reminiscent of soulslike level design, S-Game deliberately avoided making the adventure unnecessarily punishing. Multi-phase boss battles include mechanics designed to remove repetitive frustration while preserving skill-based execution, and players can swap builds or accessories rather than retrying identical setups repeatedly.
Unreal Engine 5 powers the experience, providing stable optimization during extended sessions.
Skilled players exploring the levels, secrets, and side quests can expect a full playthrough to last approximately 25 to 30 hours when the title debuts later this month.
