Regional Quarterfinals Shrink Playfield as Ohio High School Football Marches Toward Semifinals
The high school football playoff landscape across Ohio shifted dramatically this week, reducing the state’s championship field from 224 teams down to 112 as regional quarterfinals concluded. According to the Dayton Daily News, programs now stand just one victory away from securing a regional title and punching a ticket to the state final four.
While autumn weather across the state brought familiar playoff tension, the weekend results also highlighted sharp contrasts between rested contenders and teams caught on the wrong side of postseason rematches.

The Bye Week Divide
For top-seeded programs across the region, a week of rest proved to be an invaluable asset rather than a momentum killer. Ten area teams that earned a first-round bye capitalized on the extra preparation time, securing decisive wins in the regional quarterfinals. Springfield, Wayne, Trotwood, Bellbrook, Tippecanoe, Graham, Waynesville, Marion Local, Riverside, and Minster all advanced following their weeks off.
Bellbrook coach Jeff Jenkins dismissed concerns regarding the potential rust of a bye week after his squad defeated Unioto 49-14.

“A lot of people are concerned about (the bye week) and I personally wasn’t,” said Bellbrook coach Jeff Jenkins after the Golden Eagles beat Unioto 49-14. “We’ve been in that situation, and we got the opportunity to work on some things to get better. We had the opportunity to take a deep dive and analyze ourselves on all the areas that we can get better. And I thought we showed a lot of improvement tonight.”
Not everyone shared that success. Four area teams—Lakota West, Miami East, Tri-Village, and Ansonia—faltered after taking a week’s rest. The most glaring casualty occurred in Division I, Region 4, where St. Xavier upended Lakota West. The Bombers neutralized Firebirds running back Kenyon Norman, holding him to just 26 rushing yards after he entered the contest with 1,616 yards on the season.

Familiar Foes Repeat Regular Season Outcomes
Postseason brackets frequently produce deja vu, and this weekend was no exception. Several regular-season rematches mirrored their earlier outcomes, maintaining both the winners and the competitive tension of the initial meetings.
In the Greater Western Ohio Conference, Week 9 replays delivered identical victors. Springfield handled Fairmont with ease, while Wayne survived a tight, high-scoring battle against Beavercreek, ultimately holding off a late two-point conversion attempt to win 35-34. Both top-seeded league programs earned home-field advantage for the upcoming semifinals.

Similar scripts played out across other conferences. Princeton defeated Middletown, Harrison downed Talawanda, McNicholas blanked Alter 10-0, and Minster crushed Fort Recovery.
Midwest Athletic Conference Continues Small-School Dominance
The Midwest Athletic Conference once again flexed its collective muscle across the state tournament. All six games Friday night featuring a MAC program ended in victory for the league. Coldwater defeated Triway 28-13 in Region 18.

Defending state champion St. Henry also asserted dominance, forcing multiple first-quarter turnovers to defeat previously unbeaten Tri-Village 35 points, while Versailles handled Cincinnati College Prep by 25. Marion Local dispatched Fort Loramie, and New Bremen eliminated Ansonia, reinforcing the conference’s historic small-school authority.
Kenton Ridge Makes History on the Road
For ninth-seeded Kenton Ridge, a historic postseason run reached new heights on Friday. The Cougars upset top-seeded Cincinnati Wyoming 28-21, securing the victory on a late 20-yard touchdown pass from senior Bryndyn Parsons to Brennan Shaffer with just 46 seconds remaining. The win comes just one week after Kenton Ridge edged Oakwood in similar last-minute fashion.

The triumph marks the first time Kenton Ridge has ever defeated a top seed in the playoffs, the first time the program has won multiple playoff games in a single season, and ties the school record with 10 wins. The Cougars now advance to face Central Buckeye Conference foe Urbana, setting up a rematch of their October 9 regular-season meeting.
As teams look ahead to the regional semifinals, the path to the state championship narrows further, leaving elite programs just 48 minutes of regulation away from playing for a regional crown.
