980 Beds at UT Austin's Dobie Twenty21 Unavailable for 2027-28 School Year

The University of Texas at Austin is pulling 980 beds offline for the 2027–28 academic year, leaving students who already signed housing contracts scrambling to find alternatives, Chron reported. Dobie Twenty21, the 27-story residential complex located at the corner of 21st and Guadalupe streets, will not be available as a dorm option next school year.

For students who were planning to or already renewed, the university is offering priority access between November 2 and November 6 to select an available room in another residence hall. Students opting to seek accommodations outside of campus housing will be given back their $100 application fee alongside their $300 prepayment. University officials did not say why the hall would be unavailable.

A Landmark Residence with Deep Roots in Campus History

The sudden closure changes a building that has anchored student life. Built in the early 1970s, the Dobie Center originally opened as the tallest building in the city, combining student housing with a mall underneath. Over the years, the property earned a place in local lore. Daniel Johnston, the renowned artist and experimental musician, famously held a job at the McDonald’s located inside Dobie Mall. (Located just a short distance from Dobie Twenty21 is the famous 1993 mural of Jeremiah the Bullfrog created by Johnston.)

The tower also played a role in corporate history. In 1984, Michael Dell started his career selling computers from his dorm room in Dobie. In recognition of this legacy, Kevin Eltife, the UT System Chairman, stated in April that Dobie Twenty21 would take on the name Dell House to honor him.

Weighing Affordability Against Campus Inventory

When UT Austin acquired the property in October 2021 for $104 million, it was the most affordable option for students for the 2026–27 school year. A shared room featuring a private bath at Dobie cost $13,324 per individual for the current academic year, contrasting sharply with the highest-priced campus alternative: a single room equipped with a private bath at Duren Hall, which runs $20,961.

Mike Rosen, UT Senior Director of Media Strategy, emphasized the administration’s stance while detailing the displacement plan to Chron.

“Our housing team is committed to helping students find a home on or adjacent to our campus and providing housing that is affordable for our students,” Rosen said.

Even with those assurances, the university has not announced what will happen to Dobie Twenty21 in light of this announcement.
