Alaska Airlines Launches Nonstop Anchorage-to-Tokyo Route Using Boeing 737 MAX 8
Travelers in the Last Frontier will soon have a direct path across the Pacific. Alaska Airlines announced it will launch its first nonstop service between Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Narita International Airport on May 13, 2027, as Aerospace Global News reported. The seasonal route marks a major expansion for the carrier, turning the major U.S. cargo hub into an international gateway to Japan.
The flights will operate daily through early September 2027, with the final summer departure from Anchorage scheduled for Sept. 7 and the return from Tokyo on Sept. 8, 2027. Following the initial summer rush, the airline plans to transition to a three-times-weekly winter schedule beginning in January 2028.
Alaska Airlines Uses Boeing 737 MAX 8 for Tokyo Route
Operating a trans-Pacific route with a narrowbody aircraft requires precise planning. According to Aerospace Global News, Alaska Airlines will utilize the Boeing 737 MAX 8 for the Anchorage-Tokyo crossing, making it the only U.S. domestic carrier operating scheduled services to Tokyo with this specific narrowbody type from Anchorage.
While the airline recently celebrated the Federal Aviation Administration’s type approval and certification of the larger Boeing 737 MAX 10, the MAX 8 remains the only variant in the current fleet with sufficient range to complete the international journey without a stopover. Alaska expects to receive its first MAX 10 delivery in the second quarter of 2027.
“Our ambitions are global, but our foundation remains the same. From the beginning, Alaska Airlines has connected communities across Alaska, the West Coast and beyond,” said Alaska Air Group regional vice president Marilyn Romano, as reported by Aerospace Global News.
Passengers booked on the MAX 8 service will have access to First Class, Premium Class, and Main Cabin seating. First Class features recliner seats and multi-course dining, while passengers in all cabins receive complimentary meals. The airline is rolling out ultra-fast Starlink Wi-Fi across its MAX 8 narrowbody fleet.

Expanding Networks in Anchorage and Seattle
The Tokyo route forms the cornerstone of what Alaska Airlines describes as its largest-ever nonstop schedule from Anchorage. Alongside the international service, the airline has planned additional seasonal domestic routes connecting Anchorage to Austin, Nashville, and Dallas-Fort Worth in 2027.
This trans-Pacific launch follows a broader network expansion announced for Seattle. Utilizing aircraft from its 2024 acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines, Alaska will deploy Airbus A330-200 aircraft to launch nonstop services from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to Osaka, Japan, and Papeete in Tahiti starting in spring 2027.
