Arkansas Outpaces Northwestern State Behind 34 Forced Turnovers on Elementary Day
Fayetteville turned into a roaring sea of school kids on Friday, and the Razorbacks put on a clinic in defensive pressure to match the noise. Arkansas women’s basketball improved to a 2-0 record by defeating Northwestern State 89-59 at Bud Walton Arena, playing in front of 12,327 fans that included elementary schoolers. That turnout stands as the third-largest crowd in program history, creating an electric afternoon atmosphere that translated directly into chaotic defensive sequences on the hardwood.
Northwestern State actually shot a slightly better percentage from the field at 41.7% compared to Arkansas’s 38.8%, but the math told a completely different story. The Razorbacks simply overwhelmed the Lady Demons by generating an astonishing volume of extra possessions. Arkansas forced 34 turnovers on the afternoon, building on an early-season defensive effort that saw them rack up a program-record 51 forced turnovers against LSU New Orleans in their opener. Those defensive stops fueled a relentless transition game and an incredible 27 offensive rebounds—the most offensive boards by the Hogs in a game since at least 2004.
Razorbacks Use Early Freshman Spark to Build Commanding Lead
The Razorbacks started seniors Jianna Morris, D’Asia Thomas-Harris, and Emily Robinson alongside freshmen Kyiah Prestridge and Whitley Rogers. Prestridge wasted no time getting the crowd going, scoring the game’s opening points on a second-chance layup following one of many defensive takeaways. Despite a tight opening stretch that saw the Lady Demons briefly capture a 10-9 lead at the first media timeout, Northwestern State promptly hit a wall, going 0-for-6 from the field over the final 5:28 of the first quarter.
Arkansas capitalized immediately, unleashing a punishing 16-2 run. That spurt featured three-pointers from Robinson and Beautiful Waheed, alongside a bizarre sequence when NSU guard Karma Wynn accidentally converted a layup on her own basket for two Arkansas points. Even with early foul trouble for Morris and Robinson, the Razorbacks seized a commanding 25-13 lead after ten minutes of play.
The second quarter slowed to a crawl as both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm, managing just one field goal apiece through the opening 3:38. But freshman guard and Arkansas native Whitley Rogers took over late in the frame, scoring eight of the team’s final ten points before halftime—punctuated by a buzzer-beating three-pointer that sent the Hogs into the locker room with a comfortable 44-24 advantage.

Arkansas Answers Third Quarter Runs to Secure Victory
Northwestern State refused to fold easily after the break, opening the third quarter with a sharp 12-2 run over the first 3:53 to trim the deficit to 10 points. But the Razorbacks answered right back with a 13-1 run of their own, capped off by another Robinson triple off a turnover. Fifth-year player Kateri Poole added a momentum-stopping shot right before the third-quarter horn, giving Arkansas a 23-20 edge in the frame and a solid cushion heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter followed a similar script of visiting resilience met by home-court dominance. NSU rattled off seven quick points to pull within 16, but Arkansas slammed the door with a 14-2 run lasting past the three-minute mark. Over the final 2:33, the Lady Demons failed to hit a single field goal, scraping together just three points from the charity stripe while the Hogs pulled away behind sophomore forward Daniah Trammell’s and-1 play and a late three-pointer from Robinson.
When the final buzzer sounded, four Razorbacks reached double figures in scoring. Robinson led all players with 18 points, Rogers chipped in 16, Trammell added 10, and Thomas-Harris dominated the glass with 12 rebounds. On the opposing side, KP Parr paced the Lady Demons with 20 points, while teammate Chloe Donnell—coming off a stellar 46-point performance in the season opener—was held to just two points by the swarming Arkansas defense.
The schedule offers no time to rest for the undefeated Razorbacks. Arkansas returns to Bud Walton Arena on Monday, November 9, to host Kansas City, with tipoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+.
