Body Found in Bag on Brooklyn Street Investigated by Police

A Grim Find on Avenue L

Early Friday morning on October 30, 2026, a routine garbage collection night in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn turned grim when a scrap collector pulled a heavy duffel bag down Avenue L, only to discover human remains inside. The grim discovery drew a heavy police presence to the East 91st Street scene as investigators began working to determine how the adult male victim died.

Surveillance footage from the overnight hours captured the initial moments of the incident. According to security video obtained by the New York Daily News, a man and a woman pulled up to the location in a car, retrieved a large bag from the open trunk, and laid it along the curb outside a local church near East 94th Street. Federal and local authorities have not yet clarified whether that driver had any knowledge of the bag’s contents.

Warehouse Worker Watches Suspects Dump Body

Local workers nearby recalled the moments leading up to the investigation, having no initial inkling that a crime was unfolding right outside their doors. Joseph Luckner, a 51-year-old warehouse worker at a late-night barbershop across the street, watched the car arrive.

“The car just pulled up, and a man and a woman got out,” said witness Joseph Luckner, 51, a warehouse worker who was across the street at a late-night barbershop. “They dumped the body right there. We didn’t pay it any attention. Of course, we didn’t realize it was a body. I thought it was just trash night.”

Hours later, a community member known for collecting scrap metal found the Gator Case containing the corpse. After loading the heavy bag onto a hand truck, the scavenger wheeled it toward East 93rd Street before realizing it contained a body, police said. By 9 a.m., the street corner was swarmed with law enforcement officers.

Smoke Shop Owner Expresses Disgust over Incident

William Kennedy, owner of the Love Gifts Cape smoke shop located next door to the church, expressed shock over the incident.

“It’s disgusting. Disgusting to see,” Kennedy told the New York Daily News. “I’m new to the neighborhood. I don’t like things like this being dropped off in front of my place.”

Unresolved Questions for Investigators

The victim is believed to be a man between 50 and 60 years old, though his official identity has not been immediately released by authorities. While foul play is suspected, the city’s medical examiner’s office must schedule an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. As the investigation continues, no arrests have been made, and officials have not released further details regarding the suspects captured on camera.
