When Madison Heights police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the Detroit man suffering from multiple bullet wounds. Emergency responders transported him to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Officers recovered a 9mm handgun at the scene.
“It was the first pop; you would think it was like a loud balloon,” witness Mikea Wilson told ClickOnDetroit. “We got to looking at each other, and then it was like pop, pop, pop; probably about five more shots came after that. So everybody scattered after that.”
Another witness described the panic as shoppers fled the premises. “I thought it was going to be like a Halloween massacre,” the witness said. “I don’t know what’s going on. I thought somebody was running around shooting random people, honestly.”
Oak Park Man Hospitalized After Bystanders Assault Him Following Shooting
Following the shooting, the second 21-year-old man was taken into custody. However, the arrest drew immediate complications when several bystanders assaulted him before police secured the scene. Officers transported the Oak Park man to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries sustained during the bystander assault. He remains in police custody as the investigation unfolds.
Despite the frightening scene witnessed by afternoon shoppers, investigators emphasized that the shooting was an isolated, targeted incident rather than a random attack. Authorities stated that there is no known ongoing threat to public safety in the area.
The suspected shooter’s wife, Alanna, defended her husband’s actions to local reporters, asserting that he holds a Concealed Pistol License (CPL) and fired in self-defense. According to Alanna, the family was leaving the store with their three children when they were confronted by a man her husband recognized from a prior history.

“He sees us and recognizes us and tells my husband, ‘What’s up?’” Alanna recounted to ClickOnDetroit. “And my husband’s like, ‘No, not right here,’ as he’s still walking out. He’s like, ‘No, b—-, what’s up?’ And went in his pocket, and my husband drew his gun and was shaking while he was trying his gun, and he shot.”
Police have indicated plans to pursue criminal charges against the suspect as local authorities continue verifying the details surrounding the confrontation.
Temporary Closure in Madison Heights
The storefront has shut its doors to the public in the wake of the violence. Brightly printed signs posted on the front doors direct prospective customers to visit an alternate Spirit Halloween location on Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights.
Detectives continue to piece together the sequence of events inside the aisles, examining witness accounts against the statements provided by those present as the investigation proceeds.
