The Houston Dynamo Star Sounders Can’t Ignore Tonight
Few players have adapted to Major League Soccer as quickly as Guilherme. Since joining the Houston Dynamo from Santos FC, the Brazilian midfielder has established himself as the driving force behind Ben Olsen’s attack, blending elite end product with creativity, technical quality, and tactical intelligence.
Guilherme has racked up 16 goals and eight assists this season, leading all MLS midfielders in output while ranking near the top of the league in creation according to Wyscout metrics. Yet those tangible statistics only scratch the surface of why he poses such a complex tactical puzzle for opposing defenses.
Guilherme Roams Deep to Create Build-Up Advantages
One of Guilherme’s standout qualities is his extreme versatility in possession. While often deployed in advanced locations, he is granted considerable freedom to roam, regularly dropping deeper and infield to help La Naranja progress the ball. During matches against opponents like FC Dallas, he routinely drifts into deeper positions to create central overloads and secure positional superiority.
MLS All-Star Guilherme has now contributed (goal or assist) to 18 of @HoustonDynamo's 26 goals this season, becoming just the ninth player in @MLS history to do so for their club.
That willingness to sink between the lines and operate alongside central midfielders generates build-up advantages, opening passing lanes to beat opposing presses. It all stems from an elite spatial awareness. Guilherme constantly scans his surroundings before receiving possession, calculating instantly whether to turn, accelerate forward, hold up play, or recycle it.
“You need your DPs playing at a high level to really have success in this league. You can have success, and then you can make the postseason, and you can still have good years,” explained Dynamo head coach Ben Olsen. “To really maximize your team, your DPs have to be at a high level and performing. It’s just the nature of our league, and it’s nice that he’s doing that. I think he’s proven in a short amount of time that he’s one of the best players in the league.”
Teammates trust this intelligence implicitly, continually looking for him even when he is tightly marked or under intense pressure. By persistently searching for advantageous spaces—drifting wide, checking into midfield, occupying half-spaces, and arriving in the box at opportune moments—he maximizes his nuisance value.
Elite Ball Carrying Fuels Houston Transitions
Once on the ball, Guilherme’s immaculate first touch and close control allow him to escape pressure using feints, spins, body swerves, and clever changes of pace. His press resistance keeps Houston calm in chaotic moments while fueling rapid transitions from defense to attack. Averaging 4.85 dribbles per 90 and 3.45 progressive runs per 90, he ranks among the finest ball carriers in the entire league.
Standing just shy of six feet tall, he also provides a reliable physical target when Houston bypasses the press with direct play. He uses his frame to shield possession, outmuscle defenders, and win crucial fouls high up the pitch. His dead-ball expertise adds another layer of danger, with his ball-striking technique threatening opponents from corners and free-kicks alike.
What truly separates him from conventional creative midfielders, however, is the combination of chance creation and ruthless finishing. Despite generating an expected goals figure of 7.30, he has found the back of the net 16 times, averaging 2.82 shots and 1.76 shot assists per 90 minutes.
“He’s best when the lights turn on. He’s a showman. He’s fun to watch, and I’m very thankful, obviously, that he's here,” Olsen added. “There's no secret that he's been a big part of why we're in the position we have because he's a game-changer, and he’s put up that many goal contributions, and you need that. You need that from your offensive pieces.”
That impact has propelled Guilherme into the MLS MVP conversation and earned him strong consideration for MLS Newcomer of the Year. For a Houston side holding 48 points, his presence has proven to be the decisive X-factor. As the Sounders prepare to take the field tonight, containing the heartbeat of Houston’s attack will determine everything.
