Residents living along Gould Wash in Hurricane, Utah, are currently bracing for another round of potential flooding as steady rain continues to saturate the region. According to reporting from KUTV, this marks the third time in as many months that the community has faced the threat of rising water, leaving many homeowners on edge as they attempt to protect their properties from further damage.

The Recurring Threat to Hurricane Neighborhoods

The current weather system, which is expected to bring heavy rain through Monday, arrives just weeks after a damaging flood event on October 22. For many families in the area, the sight of sandbags has become a grim necessity.

Lance Clifford, a Hurricane resident, said, “Let’s get this straight. When you live in the desert, you don’t think about floods. And I never thought that this little wash right here could be so powerful.”

Hurricane residents brace for another Gould Wash flood threat

Lance Clifford, a local resident whose home was impacted by the recent weather, noted that the severity of the flooding has fluctuated between incidents. During the October event, water breached his backyard, causing deeper impact than the initial flood experienced earlier in the season. The physical toll on the neighborhood is visible, with block walls collapsing under the pressure of the runoff. Clifford described a situation where a neighbor’s wall failed, resulting in a four-foot surge of water entering their home.

Recovering from Repeated Damage

Some residents had only just completed extensive repairs from the previous flood when the October 22 event struck.

Joe Vandenberghe, another resident in the affected area, described the logistical challenge of managing the water intrusion around his home. The flooding reached his front door and inundated his garage, forcing him to pump an estimated 100,000 gallons of water out of his backyard. This volume of water shows the intensity of the runoff that Gould Wash is currently handling.

Community Resilience Amidst the Storm

While the threat remains active, the response from the broader Hurricane community has provided a measure of relief. Volunteers, including students from Hurricane High School, have been instrumental in helping residents fill and place sandbags to mitigate further damage. Vandenberghe noted that the effort was a collective endeavor, with families and individuals coming together to provide labor that many homeowners could not have managed alone.

For now, the neighborhood remains in a state of watchful waiting. Residents are monitoring the wash hourly, documenting conditions as they persist through the current storm. The hope remains that the infrastructure and the sandbagging efforts currently in place will be sufficient to prevent a repeat of the October damage. As the rain continues to fall, the focus for the community is simply on getting through the next few days safely.
