The next general manager of the Indiana Fever will step into the most high-profile job in women’s basketball with a pair of foundational superstars already on the roster, but building a competitive rotation around Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston will require immediate attention to roster margins.

Following the departure of former general manager Amber Cox, the franchise has scouts getting to work on executing the vision for the team that will take the floor for the 2027 season. The Fever hired Sheri Sam as assistant general manager and brought in Vernard Hollins as a scout.

Front Office Additions Target International and Margin Talent

Sam brings a decade of WNBA playing experience to her new role, having served as the scouting manager for the Portland Trail Blazers of the NBA since 2022. Hollins adds extensive experience playing overseas, which could lend itself to potential international scouting as talent acquisition becomes more critical under tight financial constraints.

With Clark and Boston anchoring the team, the immediate front office priority centers on free agency decisions regarding star guard Kelsey Mitchell. If Mitchell returns, the team’s salary cap space will be scarce.

Other roster commitments compound the financial challenge. Lexie Hull and Monique Billings are currently under contract on deals well above the league average. That structure leaves the remainder of the roster vulnerable to near-minimum salaries, placing a premium on identifying undervalued collegiate talent through the WNBA Draft and uncovering diamond-in-the-rough contributors.

Executive Leadership Remains in Flux During Transition Period

Questions also surround Clark’s future contract structure and whether she will opt for the potential pay raise available under the new CBA’s EPIC provision. Clark has hinted she might be willing to sacrifice to help the franchise construct the best team.

Executive leadership remains in flux during the transition period. Mel Raines, the President and CEO of Pacers Sports & Entertainment, is reportedly calling the shots for now while the franchise evaluates candidates to permanently succeed Cox.

Despite the unresolved general manager vacancy, the early addition of Sam and Hollins ensures that scouting preparations for the 2027 season are already underway.
