Halloween Homecoming in Bloomington as No. 4 Indiana Hosts Minnesota
The script flips dramatically this weekend for the Indiana Hoosiers. After playing three of their last four games on the road, the team returns to Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 31, 2026, for a high-stakes homecoming matchup against the Minnesota Golden Gophers. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast nationally on CBS.
As The Daily Hoosier reported, the fourth-ranked Hoosiers enter the week 9 contest holding a 7-1 record, while Minnesota arrives in Bloomington at 5-2. For Indiana, Saturday marks just the 18th time in program history that the team has played on Halloween, and only the third time since the turn of the century. The last such appearance came in 2020, when the Hoosiers secured a 37-21 win at Rutgers.
The Tale of the Tape and Coaching Legacies
The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 40-26-3, having won the last four meetings between the programs in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2021, according to iuhoosiers.com. Despite the historical deficit, Curt Cignetti has transformed the trajectory of Indiana football during his tenure.

Cignetti is in his third year as the head coach at IU holding a 34-game win total over the past three seasons and a 34-18 record in one-score games for his career. Across the sideline, P.J. Fleck is the head coach of Minnesota, who stands 71-46 in ten seasons with the program and 101-68 overall.
Minnesota arrives in Bloomington fresh off a gritty 13-10 victory over then-No. 15/14 Iowa. That win gave the Gophers possession of Floyd of Rosedale for the first time since 2023 and ended a five-game home losing streak to the Hawkeyes. Combined with an earlier 20-14 win over Michigan that secured the Little Brown Jug, Minnesota currently holds possession of Floyd of Rosedale, the Little Brown Jug, and Paul Bunyan’s Axe simultaneously for the first time since October 1978.

Indiana and Minnesota Showcase National Defensive Dominance
While Minnesota brings a disciplined defense to Memorial Stadium—highlighted by defensive standout Anthony Smith, who sits just 0.5 sacks away from matching Willie VanDeSteeg’s fifth-place career mark of 21.5 sacks—Indiana’s defensive front has set national standards. iuhoosiers.com notes that the Hoosiers have limited opponents to under 100 yards rushing on 27 occasions since the start of 2024, leading the entire nation.
Indiana has either tied or won the turnover battle in 32 straight games dating back to 2024, the most in the FBS since at least 1995. The previous long streak belonged to Air Force from November 2007 through November 2009 (27 games).
Predictive models heavily favor the home side. ESPN’s SP+ computer projection favors Indiana 34-11 with a 92% win probability, while ESPN’s FPI gives the Hoosiers a 95.9% chance to secure the victory. Tickets for the showdown at Memorial Stadium are sold out.
