Katie Suarez Declared Brain Dead After Bath Beach Stabbing

A Morning Routine Shattered Along the Brooklyn Waterfront

“F–k man, that’s sad. Very sad,” a neighborhood resident recalled of 28-year-old Katie Suarez, a bank teller who was found stabbed on a popular Brooklyn waterfront path. Additional reporting by Marie Pohl and Khristina Nariznaya noted that a marathon runner was stabbed.

Suarez was attacked just after 8 p.m. Friday near Bay 17th Street and Shore Parkway in Bath Beach, police sources told The New York Post. Her father discovered her on the grass after going out to look for her when she did not return home.

Emergency responders rushed Suarez to Langone Hospital, where medical staff declared her brain dead. Investigators found blood smears on a metal railing she likely grabbed for support, blood staining the concrete walkway, and her pink cell phone lying on the ground near the edge of Gravesend Bay.

An Unprovoked Assault in a Normally Quiet Neighborhood

The violent encounter along the scenic promenade—which runs parallel to the busy Belt Parkway and offers sweeping views of Staten Island and the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge—appears to have been entirely random, according to police sources cited by The New York Post. As of Saturday, detectives had not made any arrests and were actively canvassing the area for surveillance video.

Specialty teams from the New York Police Department descended on the location through the night and into Saturday, deploying scuba units, aviation teams, K9 units, and drones to search the waterfront. Neighbors and local business owners expressed shock at the violence in a space typically used for evening walks, cycling, and fishing.

“I’ve lived here a little over 15 years now, and this is my favorite place to come and walk and unwind,” Lana S., a 42-year-old local small business owner, told The New York Post. “It always seems very peaceful and calm here… I’ve never, ever seen anything violent or dangerous around here.”

Crime Data Contrast in the 62nd Precinct

While the broader Bath Beach community is often viewed as a quiet residential enclave, local crime statistics reflect underlying shifts. According to NYPD data cited by The New York Post, overall crime in the local 62nd Precinct dropped by 0.5% as of October 25. However, felony assaults in the precinct rose by 17% over the same tracking period.

Longtime residents noted the jarring nature of the attack. Anna Dece, who has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and was walking her Chihuahua near the scene, voiced immediate anxiety to reporters about safety along the corridor. Meanwhile, police continue their search for the perpetrator as the community mourns a family-oriented neighbor. A woman leaving the victim’s apartment said that Suarez “wasn’t lost yet.”

Police Deploy Specialized Teams as Neighbors Express Grief

A police spokeswoman stated that the “NYPD taking this very seriously and have many of our speciality teams out last night and all of today, including scuba, aviation, K9s, and drones.” A neighbor described Suarez as an “especially good” person who was always quiet and kind, adding that “they are good neighbors. I saw her constantly.” Another resident remarked, “My heart goes out to her family.”
